fake whitewall
My grandpa was telling me that when he used to mess around with wheels and tires that there was a way to have whitewalls without the price. He said you would break the bead around the wheel and put a white ring around the wheel ring and you would have a whitewall. does anyone know what they are called and if you can still get them.
Thanks

Re: fake whitewall
a friend of mine has a 52 buick that he painted his own white walls for very little cost...he went to walmart, bought krylon "fusion" paint for plastic furniture. he painted his own white walls 3 years ago and they still look kool! like anything prior to painting, prep work is important. once cleaned and masked off, apply several light coats to achieve the best finish.

Re: fake whitewall
flappers... porta-walls. I ran/run them on my 59. You can find them on ebay or check out Lucas tire on the internet. I think they are in Ohio and California.
They worked well on the rear as there is not a lot of weight on the rear and the side walls of the tire don't flex as much. The fronts last about a year and a half. More flex and bulge causing the white wall flex. I ended up running a real wide white on the front and a flapper on the rear. Still good for me. 3" on a 50 series 3" on a 70 series 3" on rear 70 series

Re: fake whitewall
pay attention to the warnings when using with radial tires// i've seen them fail and they whip around and destroy wheelwells and other sheetmetal around the tire area

Re: fake whitewall
check out youtube on "how to make whitewall tires". it's an interesting old school technique.
my pops used to run the portawall back in the days, but said he always has issues with them. I have a set of BFG Silvertowns on my Cadillac that was purchased from Coker..... and they were NOT cheap! try about 200 bone a PIECE!! eeeeek!

Re: fake whitewall
In 1964 at 15 years old I worked installing tires at a tire store as my first job. We sold a bunch of those "Port-A-Walls" for every car model imaginable. Western Auto also sold a million of them over the years.
An inner tube (pre-tubeless tires) was REQUIRED to install the "Flappers", and I would think you would still need to run them because of sealing issues. You basically deflated the tire, stretch the whitewall bead to the inside of the wheel bead, and re-inflate. As you can imagine, in hot summer driving the Port-a-Walls would eventually give up the ghost and decorate the roadways with little white "alligator tails". Just my 2 cents. NoNeck

Re: fake whitewall
Port a walls are a little dodgy used with radial tires due to speed and sidewall flexing. Bias ply tires are best used with inner tubes as mentioned previously. Ask me how I know!?!
