Who has the 700r4 - 3:73 combo? opinions on tranny, rear combo

who has a 700r4 with 3:73 gears in the rear? i wanna know how you like it and what kind of rpms you turn on the highway. i have a th350, a th400, and a 700r4 i just acquired. and a 12 bolt 3:40, a 10 bolt 3:08, and a 10 bolt 3:73 so i got a choice in combos to use. i really like the sound of the 700r4 with 3:73 rear but don't want to be spinning the motor lik a top on out on the highway. and also what is involved as far as driveshaft with using the 700r4? do i need to find a drive shaft from a 700r4 truck?

I have a 700 behind my BB with 3.73's and 26" tall tires. At 70 mph, I turn less than 2500, closer to 2200, if I remember right. It's been well over a month since the truck's been out of the garage. I think at 90, it turned 2800 or so. I'll be getting it out and knocking the dust off this weekend, so I'll be able to recall what it really does.

as for the driveshaft, a TH350 driveshaft will work just fine.

I do. I do.

At 75, with 27" tires, I'm turning around 2200 rpm.

IMO, no better combination out there for the street.

cool so if use the th350 drive shaft thats in my truck now and the 3:73 10 bolt i"ll be set, seeing as how my truck already has a 10bolt so none of them expensive conversion u-joints.

I think you'll like the o/d with the 3.73.I drive the bayway at 80 to 90 most every day and am not near at wot,and this is with a tired old bigblock with a skazillion miles on it.Only thing I don't like is the one/two shift is very quick but I think you can buy governor kits to overcome this during full throttle runs.

I'm runnin a 454/700r4/eaton3.73 posi and 28" tires, don't have a tach so don't know about the rpms but when the needle is buried past a 100 she'll still kick into passing gear if you floor it,so I don't think the revs are too high.

Good Luck

Tom

Thumbs up

It sounds like your gonna go with this combo and i'd reccomend this combo for every day street driving.

In Dec. of '86 i custom ordered my '87 and this is the combo i specified.......well there wasn't any option for the trany all you could get was the 700r4 but you could get several differant gear ratios so i got the 3:73's.

So here's my final set up 5.7L - 700r4 - 3:73 posi - 26" or 27" tall rear tires not real shure and i cruise at 70 MPH @ 2150/2200. This is a good hiway set up i get around 13 to 13.5 MPG.

And this combo is real good outta the whole in low gear.

I love this combo and i wouldn't run any thing else unless i was into racing in the 1/4.

Some one mentioned 4:11's i wouldn't run this gear for anything but racing my first truck had 4:11's and you can't run this on the hiway for long period's of time it's just to hard on the engine.

So if you only plan on driving around your town and not doing long distance trips and fuel milage isn't a biggie then go for it.

keep in mind the 700 has a lower 1st and 2nd gear, so it would compare to 4.10's and a TH350 there, and have overdrive to boot. I agree with this combo as well, as that is what I plan for my truck eventually, too.
