let me know what every one thinks of this Idea here are some pictures I think this may work great.

Too much spacing and what ever the stuff is inbetween the uprights, if it flexes easy and conforms easy, its going to lie to you . As it will easily conform to the cab top no matter what. Unless its some UFO memory metal of some sort? You'd be better off using plaster of paris, over some thin food plastic so it doesn't react something in the paint. You would need to make the mold in a thin strip of sorts, use clay to build the form to pour it into. After it drys you have your gauge. Even fiber glass could do the same.

Re: 55 Chevy, Matching upper portion of the cab

Hey Kim and dicer
Its something I been working on its based off another product. But I modified it to work as a profile Gage its seems to work with any curved surface, I am not sure what dicer means. it hasn't followed every curve in the truck cab its ridged so it is adjustable so it will stay stable and wont move and flexible enough as not to get a false reading and it will stay put wherever you put the tool.I am going to build some more and see what happens. it is good for all kinds of profiles or an entire cab, doors, hood lots of uses.

Kim, Dicer

Once you lock it down it doesn't move. it finds the low spots pretty well very accurate. you can see the curve. This picture was taken off the truck. The curve is still holding.

I hope this doesnt sound the wrong way but that seems like a lot of messing around. It looks like you did a real nice job of welding the piece in, I would think that your eye and your hand would be enough to tell you how to finish it. Again I dont mean to sound smarta$$ or conceited, its just the only way Ive ever done it....
That rig will never be able to duplicate the profile in 3 dimensions but the flat of your hand can feel differences you cant even measure..it does take some practice tho

I welcomed the comments on what you guy's thought of this Idea,I didn't take it the wrong way.
I know that the hand is a better gauge of body lines. This is a guide and not a replacement of your hands it gives a person a starting place to work off of. just like a profile gauge does, only this gauge has a little longer reach.

Larry, nice contour gauge. You'll find it to be very useful when comparing side to side. Did you build it or buy it?
Many of the top metal shapers I know use contour gauges like yours to quickly check a panel.

Re: 55 Chevy, Matching upper portion of the cab

nice idea, but it will not work for a sharp contour, you can see that it bends evenly between the 2 anchor points, but a panel does not necessarily bend in the middle, look at the end,
it looks good as long as you position the middle of the jig curve on the apex of the panel curve, but then you are matchinh the jig to the panel, not the other way around. it will work for long sloping curves, just not sharp ones..

Re: 55 Chevy, Matching upper portion of the cab

I got it at woodcraft its great for mostly for gradual curves, it wont do sharp curve.
here is the link www.woodcraft.com I am going to modify It a little as to fit tighter curves

I am going to modify it to make more extreme curves So I will be building some for body work so I can make tight curves.

Re: 55 Chevy, Matching upper portion of the cab

servt-Chevelle,
Nice Chevelle. looking forward to some videos.
I just started in body work so I am not as tuned in as all of you guy's but I learning more every day.
I'm getting better. I know body work is hard. it's a lot of sending re filling sanding refilling to build up layers. I see some you-tube videos my filler doesn't flow like theirs.Do they reduce it with some reducer?

Its great fun

Re: 55 Chevy, Matching upper portion of the cab

Okay but it will still only show a true radius, what if there is something other than a true radius you are trying to check? To check a contour you have to have multiple very small segments that are the gauging points. Your thing there is more like a huge radius gauge. Try checking around something like the area of the cab below the fuel tank filler hole that is a compound radius area, and the eastwood thing will work much better. The plaster is more accurate than that thing.

Re: 55 Chevy, Matching upper portion of the cab

Dicer, your right the Eastwood contour gauge is what I use as well for tight contours I have the 6" harbor freight has the exact same gauge for 4.99 the 6".I use the large contour gauge to check the upper cab, hood, doors fenders, large areas that you cant get a contour gauge in the style that is long enough to check the contours like the cab, doors, finders and so on. So I figured that this tool would be great for this kind of application not to replace the Eastwood model it has some great uses as well.
