My door wont latch

Last night, I noticed that when I shut my door, it will only initially latch, but wont latch flush (as if you didnt shut the door hard enough). It doesnt matter how hard I slam the door, it will just initially latch. I can push on the door and it will spring back. What could this be?

Re: My door wont latch

Has this problem just started or has it been that way for some time?

Re: My door wont latch

Most likely the latch plate on the door frame has slipped inward. Try moving it out a little. Four bolts hold it in place and it has special spacers with teeth to keep it from slipping.

Re: My door wont latch

I agree with readjusting the latch plate. From all the slamming it's most likely jarred loose. If that doesn't solve the problem it could be the latch internals need to be cleaned and lubbed up. And if there the hinges have too much slop the door could be sagging causing a misalignment too.

Re: My door wont latch

I notice that in the past month that i have had to pull the door towards me to open it from the inside or push on it from the outside. I adjusted the latch plate a few months ago and it is still in the same place. Every 10 door shuts, it will close correctly, but I will hear a spring sound from the inside of the door which makes me think its the latch. Is it hard to get to once I take the handles and door skin off?

You ever determine the problem? Mine is now suddenly doing the same thing.

Did you put new weatherstripping on it by chance? First thing I would do is to roll down the window and spray some lube on the door latch down through the window opening. You can see it pretty good with a flashlight.

Thanks, Leon. I'll try that. It does have new weatherstripping, but was working fine with it for a couple of months.
