Question engine swaps

what is the best engine swap for a 68 truck? I am doing this on a budget and was wondering how difficult it is. What do you need as far as wiring to do swaps and where is the best place to buy all the stuff to do it? pics would be nice too, thanks

Re: engine swaps

I would say that is a pretty open question, you have a budget in mind? Best in my opinion would be any "modern" fuel injected SBC/BBC of your choice. The LSx's seem to be the way to go, if I swap my other truck it will be getting a 5.3/6.0, 4L60/80 combo for sure. My dream combo would be a 6.2/6L80E out of a new Escalade, but I still love my 96' LT1/700R4 though...

Depends on your needs wants and budget.
I just did a inline six 3 speed to 350 4 speed swap.
Have a detailed thread in the build section.

Re: engine swaps

That is up to you, the TPI motors are good units. The intake runners dont support high RPM power much over 5K from what I know, great low end torque though. Its really a matter of considering all the costs involved in mounts, exhaust, fuel system, wiring, etc to get it running compared to a more powerful/efficient LSx or similiar.

Re: engine swaps

If you do use the TPI, you will need all of the computer/wiring associated with it to make it run in your truck.

Standard small block (non-computerized) would be easiest if you are going away from the six.

The simplest would be to find a parts/donor truck , trade engines, and sell off the donor complete as a runner (if your six runs). That way you would know you have all of the necessary parts (motor mounts, wiring, etc).

There are so many options, you need to have a good idea which direction you want to go before you start.

Re: engine swaps

ls9? Everybody has a budget. Whatever you figure it's going to cost and how long you think it will take, double it. If that doesn't fit in your budget go another route.
what are your goals with this engine swap? What are your mechanical abilities?
a free engine might sound good until you find it needs $2000 worth of machine shop work.
