TH400 Questions

Will a 2WD TH400 work in a 4X4 with some sort of tail shaft swap??? Or is it a totally different case?

Father has a 1 ton dually with NP205 T-Case, and the tranny is out...Can't seem to find a 4X4 tranny to replace it....therefore looking to see if 2WD would possibly work with some tail shaft changes?

I'm a 4 speed guy so any help would be great!!!

My th400 for my blazer is the same as short shaft 2wd 400, with the tailshaft housing removed.

Re: TH400 Questions

In my experience with chevy trans, you will be able to remove the tail shaft housing and swap out the output shaft.

Re: TH400 Questions

Yup, I believe the case is the same but the mainshaft is different. I have heard that original 4wd cases are heavier castings but cannot personally verify this.

Re: TH400 Questions

I have a 2wd tranny that has a bolt yoke. This tranny is the same as the early ones that had the 8 track pattern 205. Pre-85 IIRC. 86 and newer requires the short 205 input.

What year is his truck? theres a chance you can just get a good 2wd TH400 and remove the rear bolt on yoke and bolt up his NP205 Ive done this on a few trucks but some of the 205s require a shorter tail shaft. Just depends on whick 205 he has.

Re: TH400 Questions

Heres a few pics of one of my TH400 205s, you can see how deep the input gear is, this is the one that will bolt right up to a 2 wheel drive TH400
