New Exhaust Questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am going to have dual 2.25" exhaust installed on my 1979 SWB Bonanza. Before I go to the exhaust shop I will install headers and have both mufflers in-hand. This will greatly reduce the costs, I hear. My '79 has a nearly stock 350. While looking at headers and mufflers, I got a little overwhelmed and needed some expert advice. My questions:

1. Do I want a muffler w/ centered, center/offset, or offset/offset inlet and outlet configuration? What is commonly used on these trucks?

2. Are there a set of good/inexpensive longtube headers for this truck? The easier to install the better...

3. What are your thoughts on "h-pipes"? Worth it?

I always went with 30" cherry bombs myself. With pipes exiting in front of tires.

I ran hooker competition long tubes on my 305. they work for the 350 as well. bought them on jegs for $195 about 2 months ago and could not be happier with them. i ran dual magnaflow mufflers with straight pipe and eliminated the cat. just make sure that if you remove the cat that you re-install a new bun (the exhaust shop should supply you with this) to put your o2 sensor back on. if not you will throw your check engine light on. enjoy your new rumble!

A '79 won't have a check engine light.

OP, wish I could help you with your configuration, but I have no idea.

Do you have any pics of where they placed your x pipe?

I am finding that hooker and hedman are comparable in price and consumer feedback. Ease of install? I'm also looking for the most complete header kit. I hear some guys talking about how header kits sometimes still require other items like retainers, etc...

most muffler shop's dont like it when you supply the muffler's and it reflect's in the labor. check with em befor you order muffler's, you may find there is no save'ns.

Thank you for the advice, I've never heard that before. I'm just so used to ridiculous mark ups. One Exhaust tech wanted to charge me $250 for header installation. I was blown away, but maybe I'm just ignorant to exhaust systems pricing.

thats a good point zane M about the check engine light. I guess my excitment for exhaust got the best of me. haha enjoy whichever exhaust system you choose. its one on the funnest things about a truck IMO.

The thing is, most muffler shops can only have so many mufflers on hand.

Flowmaster for example has about a million different mufflers, and in each series they are small differences between models. It's not uncommon to ask for something like a 40 Delta Flow, and you end up with a Original 40 just because that's what they had in stock. They figure you wouldn't know the difference in sound, and the outside case appearance is the same.

You are there wanting an exhaust and they wanna sell you one to make that profit, simple as that. If they have a similar muffler on hand, I doubt they would turn down your business if they don't have the exact model you want.

If you want a very specific muffler, either walk in with them or call ahead to make sure they have or can order the exact model number you need.
