chalet fans! found one for sale, I think
Is this a real one? Maybe it just got painted white over the years. I learned from this forum these are quite rare so I thought I would pass along the classified.

Not bad except for the caved in bedside. Somebody swapped in a 14b full floater and what looks like 8 lug rotors on the D44 up front. Better for the drivetrain thats for sure.

Yes it is, and I'm thinking the photo exposure is off a bit, this may be one of the all-tan versions where the camper stripes got peeled off - see this photo link for the five different '77 color combos. I left a message for the seller, so maybe I'll get various details confirmed later.
I do my best to search out all the ads for these, but I missed this one, so I'm grateful for the heads-up on it! **Edit - the seller just called back, he will look for the camper unit's serial # later, but he had the VIN and it does check out to be a '76. He said the prior owner did repaint the whole thing white, most likely to match a matching trailer used for some pro horse racing operation...*

Did they all come with 8-lug axles like this one has?

I hadn't counted up the lugnuts on 'em, but a quick glance at some pics of my former one and some others shows 6 lug wheels. The seller said the prior owners towed a rather large trailer, so my guess is that the guy upgraded it, like some others have done. Our other member here Doug W "1976K5CHALET" is more of the expert on the shortcomings of the factory stock setup, compared to what these really need for tougher work.

Re: chalet fans! found one for sale, I think
Looks like axles have been upgraded to 3/4 ton. If you look at rear passenger tail light looks like some red paint underneath so has been repainted. If the camper is in really good condition inside(doubtful or they would have pics) it might be worth what they're are asking. Lots of rust on truck, plus mileaage I'd give it about a 3 our of 10. $1500 worth of truck.
But, they don't make em anymore so if you really want one, you could do worse. Just will take a lot of elbow grease to make nice. |
