72 burb poly fuel tank install

bought a new poly fuel tank for my 72 350/auto burb. Top of tank and sender were pretty rusty. Original sender(or what there was left of it) had 2 lines coming out of it - supply and return I imagine. My pump has a supply and return as well. the new poly tank has one supply line coming out of the sender. What was the purpose of the return line? Is it necessary? My plan was to replace the pump with a single line pump and eliminate the return line. Anything I should know before I do this?
