Re: will it fit?
Good transmissions, actually they have been used alot recently for racing transmission cases.
Should be a good one behind the 6 cyl. |

Even with the 4.11 gears?

Re: will it fit?
thats the best one for the inline six because of the close ratio from 1st to 2nd the 700 has a big drop from 1st to 2nd which sixes don't like.

Re: will it fit?
mid 80's monte's had a 3.73 (but then again they had 305 motors). Agree with gimmy, 4.11 should be ok, but if it were me, I might lean to a smaller numerical ratio like 3.73, etc. But if you have the 4.11 already, go with it and see how you like it.
Also, regarding torque converter, the 2004R used computer controlled torque converter lock-up, which you probably don't have. But not to worry, you can rig it manually (which I don't recommend because then you gotta enable/disable it with a switch as you reach higher speed/decel to slower speed - i.e. you only want the torque converter to lock up at higher speeds). Or, better yet, TCI and B&M both offer non-computerized kits for the 2004R that you install and don't have to monkey with all the time like the manual set-up. Here's a link to it: http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Tra...al-speedometer Be forewarned - that free trans is suddenly "un-free" if you buy this puppy... ($191). There are probably other, less expensive options as well. Here's the TCI solution, a little less expensive: http://www.compperformancegroupstore...Category_Code= Not sure if you need to add this part into the mix or not on the TCI setup: http://www.compperformancegroupstore...Category_Code= I like the 2004R, it made driving my 85 monte ss a blast. Even if you have to buy a lockup kit, you still got the trans for a song, so a pretty good deal i'd say. Last edited by jocko; 05-07-2011 at 07:06 PM. |

Re: will it fit?
That 200 behind a straight six should make for a great combo.
One thing I could never understand though, is why GM put a 200 in the heavy Monte SS and S10 with 4.3 got a 700. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: will it fit?
Jocko, your right. Nothing is free, still have to have a buddy of mine look at the tranny to see if its even worth using. But thanks to yours and everyone else's advice I at least know its a good fit for my truck. I'llsee how much my "free" tranny cost me in the end then decide if its worth what I paid for it.

Re: will it fit?
Assuming you already have an auto in your truck it should be a pretty straight forward swap. There are plenty of articles out there showing how to wire up the tq conv lockup switch.
With the 4.10 gears this thing should feel like a rocket if it had a Glide or th trans before and you will get reduced rpm's at cruising speeds. Good luck with the swap, Keep us updated how it goes! Posted via Mobile Device |

So, the 2004R is capable of handling some hp, especially if modified even a little bit. I think the 700R4s always got more press because they were more plentiful - but I agree, always thought it was odd that the 2004R was in the monte and GNs in the day. For that matter - I never understood why they had 2 separate transmissions - as much as everything was consolidating at GM back then, why not just ONE O/D automatic and make it beefy enough to handle whatever was needed? Guess that's why I'm not the CEO. The good news is it just gives us one more choice nowadays. |

Re: will it fit?
Even core value for a 200 is $100, so being free you are already that far ahead. Even if you have to have it rebuilt, and need to get some additional parts, you still saved that minimum $100. Well worth it in my book, the 200's are an excellent transmission. Congrats on the score.
