350 timing

Hi Chevy Owners,

I just purchased a 68 Chevy C10 lwb with 350 400 turbo trans. I was trying to tune my truck up with the information I got off a Chevy web site that shows the dwell at 28-32 deg and timing at 4 deg. I was told by the previous owner thatit was 12 deg timing. Which is right??. Also after i set the dwell and timing, I would rev the engine up and then watch the timing markwith the timing light and it took a while for the mark to get back down to the 4 deg I had set it at(could it be a bad distributor?

I would run it at 4 degrees like GM reccomends.....12 degrees of base timing with points is a bit much. Were you timing it with the vaccum advance disconnected, and the line plugged?

The timing mark should come back down pretty fast. If it is slow in coming down, i would suspect that you advance weights are sticking. Pull off the distributor cap to see. Pull the advance weights back, and they should spring right back to where they were to start with. If not, try lubiricating them with a little WD40, and they should then spring right back.
