Re: how do i identify a sb400 just from looking at it?

There are ONLY 3 casting numbers for SB 400's, they'll end in 511 (early, most are 4-bolt), 817 and 509. The early 509's are the best, they have more beef in main webs and a couple of other areas.
Harmonic balancer will be external balance. If it's stock, you'll see where material has been machined off around most of the outer ring, where a 350 will be smooth and the same thickness all the way around.
SOME 400 blocks have 3 core plugs on the block, some have 2 with the boss for the center one and most of the 509's have 2 core plugs with no unused boss. That's why they're called "cheater" blocks, they look more like a 350. If you're looking at the side of the block, it will be raised slightly around the cylinders where a 350 will be perfectly flat.
If that '79 has it's original block, it will either be an 817 or 509, head casting numbers should end in 882.
Stock crank is fine, it's nodular iron versus most cast small block cranks which are plain cast iron.
They respond well to cam swaps, really wake up with a pair of Vortec heads, make sure to keep compression around 9:1. It'll pull like a big block.

"SOME 400 blocks have 3 core plugs on the block" and they have a big ass balancer because they are externaly balanced.

Re: how do i identify a sb400 just from looking at it?

^ some 400's have balancers that are smaller in diameter than 350's, it's the cut away section that gives 'em away...unless someone has spend the coin to have it internally balanced, like the Lunati crank I have.

Re: how do i identify a sb400 just from looking at it?

Never seen different sized balancer. I've had a dozen or so 400s....

Quickest easiest is to look at the balancer like what was mentioned above.

Re: how do i identify a sb400 just from looking at it?

All factory 400 balancers I've seen are 7", but I've seen a few 350's built with 8 inchers, looked like dang big block balancers hanging off the front of 'em.
