big block shortbeds?

I have a question for you guys. Are there many shortbed big blocks out there, '94-'97 vintage, or are those just the SS trucks? I'd love to find a loaded one that was original. They are destined to be the next classics, IMO. I see a few 454's but usually they are 3/4 or 1 tons.

Re: big block shortbeds?

From what I've seen/read, 93 was the last year for 454 in a 1/2 ton, 99 was the last year for 454 in a 3/4 ton.....

Re: big block shortbeds?

Didn't these come with a super charger? Also they say SS on the sides and most I think were black with red racing stripes.

Re: big block shortbeds?

no. they didnt have super chargers. they were made from 90-93. the 90 and i believe 91 were only available in black. 92-3 were available in black, red, and white, with white i believe to be the rarest.

Are you talking about the 454SS? They were never supercharged. For 1990, they pretty much got the same 230hp 454 as the 2500 and 3500 trucks. '91-'03 models had 250hp. They were all solid color with "454SS" decals at the rear bedsides. All black for the first 2 years with the addition of white and red as options for the last 2. They never had factory racing stripes.

Peanut port headed truck engines in flashy shortbed trucks.
They can be made to run very well, check 'em out at 454SS.com

Re: big block shortbeds?

I have seen them come with the SS lettering on this scoop. Is this not a factory option?

Typhoons and Syclones (yes, with an 'S') were turbocharged 4.3L V6s. I had a rich friend in HS with a brand new Ty. That guy couldn't drive the thing to save his life. What a shame. Shoulda given it to me.

Re: big block shortbeds?

I have long thought GM needed to build a shortbed reg cab 1/2 ton with a hot little engine, maybe a big block with a 5 speed and tire melting performance to compete straight across with the Lightning from Ford. I ain't a Ford man but if there is one to that pulls at me it's that one.
Heck even Dodge has that Viper engined shorty. Why not GM?

Re: big block shortbeds?

Building one myself, except no power adder.
Shortbed dually on a C&C frame with a pair of 295's on each side, 1-ton 4WD front end, pump gas 565 under the hood.
I WILL get traction...

Didn't those engines also come stroked and have ported, vortec type(pre vortec labeled) heads as well as headers from Holly for an option(some dealers offered it)? If I remember right, that engine could get up to 298 pony's. It's a shame GM did not persue that technology any further. However I know it was like a X amount being made and I knew some guys on the list that never got theirs or were tired of waiting. Does your friend still have it?
