New exhaust today! Finally! (now with added rant! see below)
Well, ok, so I don't have the truck back yet, but I just dropped it off at the local performance exhaust shop (Exhaustman in Azusa, CA).
I ordered 2-1/4" aluminized pipe w/ crossover, dual Magnaflows, exiting behind the rear tires at 45 or 60 degree angle. I should be picking it up later today at 5 or 6 pm. I'll post back here to let everyone know how it went. Hopefully I'll able to record some sound files and/or videos of it and post those here as well. The thing I'm most happy about is that I finally got off my butt and am making some progress! EDIT: SEE BELOW FOR ADDITIONAL RANT ON BAD BUSINESS BEHAVIOR. Progress is good. I did exhaust on my 69 when I got tired of smelling exhaust fumes in the cab!

I like the look of angled exhaust after the rear tires. I did mine the same way and was VERY happy with the sound and look. It looked more like a car exhaust exiting.

The bad news: The guy ran out of time and didn't want to spend the time and labor to install the crossover He said if I wanted it still to come back some other day and he'd install it. Oh well.
The good news: I got my truck back and am pretty pleased with the results. The Magnaflows sound pretty darn good! They have a nice mellow sound, very nostalgic sounding I suppose you could say, but then when you get on the accelerator they open up! They have a nice deep roar to them. I already set off a car alarm when I was just cruising by Also, he put on chrome tips because the length of pipe didn't quite reach the outside edges of the bed and he said he'd have to weld in new sections of pipe, thus increasing the price. I don't really know if I like them or not. I do however notice the "popping" that's caused by not having the crossover pipe. It has a sort of "motorcycle" rhythmic sound to it. I'd like to go back and get that H-pipe installed. One thing I have to say above all else is that they did an excellent job bending and installing the pipe from front to back. I really do have to take some pictures so people can see how clean their work is. I will try to post back later when I have the time (and the daylight) to snap some pictures and capture some sounds. |

YEP, I converted to Magnaflows a couple of years ago on my 68, then on my 95 Tahoe about 8 months ago after a BAD experience with Flowblockers
I converted the 68 cause the Flowblockers were to OBNOXIOS & seemed to cackle. The Magnaflows have a great DEEP tone, and they out flow chambered mufflers

For those of us whose trucks see the woods, watch those pipes behind the tires. If you back up into something (like a stump) you could kink the pipe and cause this!

Ya know, one thing I can't stand is people not being honest. I hate deception. Here's the story: I go back to the exhaust today to get the H-pipe installed and the owner wasn't there, but his assistant was (actually the guy that installed my mufflers). I explain to him that the owner told me that they ran out of time last time I was there, and that's why he didn't install the H-pipe. Well, the worker goes on to tell me that the boss purposely told him to not install it because he was already mad that the "h-frame" on my truck 'caused them extra tubing and labor. Well boo-hoo I said. The owner gave me an estimate on a '68 Chevy truck and I assumed he knew what he was talking about. He asked me what kind of frame I had at the time I ordered it, and I said it had trailing arms with coil springs, because he wasn't sure if I had leafs or coils. Ok, sounds simple enough, but now the story is that the owner thought I told him the wrong kind of frame (maybe on purpose) so I could get a lower price, since the supposed "h-frame" type is harder to work on. Well, I got news for you pal, THERE'S ONLY ONE TYPE OF FRAME ON 67-72's! I told the worker this, and he agreed, and said it was not right the owner screwed me out of the h-pipe on purpose. He told me bring the truck back and he'd install the h-pipe for free, so I dropped it off a little while ago. At least there's someone honest at that shop.

Ok, so I picked up the truck later in the day, the guy installed the H-pipe no problem, no charge.
I am very happy that I got the H-pipe installed finally. It smoothed out the sound alot. Before, with the uneven exhaust flow, it popped and sputtered like an out of tune motorcycle. It was annoying to me. Now it's alot smoother, and more mellow; it seems to have reduced the overall sound level by about 1/3. It still sounds great when you step on it, but it's very quiet when you're just cruising. It made me love my Magnaflow's even more! To anyone that was thinking about having an H-pipe (or X-pipe) installed, do it! You will be very happy you did. Now I just need to actually record some sound files to post here, like I've been meaning to for about a month now. |

Yeah, no kidding. If you happen to find a good shop in or around Pomona, let me know. I live in Glendora, so it's only a couple cities away.

exhaust
I had the same system installed on my 69 4X4. But used 2 1/2 pipe and the H pipe. I'm running 3 chamber flowmasters. All powered by a 383 stroker. It took my shop here in Reno, NV a day and a half and $ 500.00. But I think it was worth it.
