1968 lwb assistance requested...

Getting a 68 longbed, the price is right (free) has a 327 that needs a gasket set, minor leaks. Front end is original and stock so it needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

Here's my issue... I want power steering, disc brakes (at least up front), 5 lug conversion, and a static drop that still has some suspension in the back. I need to know where to go to find this stuff, prices and how hard is it to do.

I need the bed to be as low as possible because its going to be my bike hauler. Don't want to bottom out the bike on the ramps and tailgate. Want it to have some suspension to carry the bike and other than that, just want it to look good without c-notching or raising the bed.

Any help would be awesome.

Thanks guys...

How much $ ya wanna drop?

How low do you want to go?

Id swap a 73 + crossmember rebuild it throw some drop spindles on there and trim a coil.

For the rear, either a 71 72 rearend or some conversion axles (providing its a coil spring rearend). With shock relocators shocks adj trac bar and dropped springs.

I'm not wanting to drop a lot of bread seeing as how 2 projects at once on a low budget isn't fun. Trust me, top ramen is getting old lol.

I'd like to go as low as possible. It's just gonna be a transpo truck for bike parts and the occasional chase truck when i shoot outta town on my shovelhead. I just want it comfy for the old lady to drive and easy for me to the bike in without damaging the bike.

Well, Id find a 73+ front crossmember (maybe score a swaybar also). Rebuild it, or put it on as is. Be sure to grab prop. valve and MC (id use the MC as a core for a new one).

cut a coil off the front springs (lower ya about 2")

Reinstall with grade 8 hardware

for the rear, you do have coil springs?

Id score some dropped springs (4") off here or ebay (80-110$) you can make your own shock relocators) and find an adj panhard/or make one.

Mc? I don't understand. New to truck work. I'm a bike builder and welder lol. Have rebuilt plenty of motors and trannys and done maintainence and body mods, mostly shaving stuff. Never got into suspension or suspension mods.

The rest of it doesn't sound too outlandish. Now to track down parts!

thanks old blue!

Might look into rear bags, just for the ride and adjust ability, go with the spindles and drop coil up front, bag the rear.

Re: 1968 lwb assistance requested...

Gotcha. So the cross members will have power brake disks and power steering? Those are the only upgrades I want for handling purposes...

Re: 1968 lwb assistance requested...

One question I do have tho...2/3 of what I needed info on wasn't on suspension. does power steering and brake fall under the suspension umbrella? just want to make sure I'm posting in the right spot next time.

thanks again
