won't idle
We put a 1985 305 V8 in my 67 3/4 ton that had a 250 6 cylinder. It didn't run very well until we rebuilt the carburetor, but it still won't idle. There is a tan wire with a black stripe on it that we're not sure where it went. I would appreciate any help with this. It is a Rochester quadrajet with an electric choke. The electric choke is working fine & it seems to run OK at higher rpms.

Re: won't idle
From past experience it could be any of the following on a QJet:
Float adjustment Primary blade / Choke adjustment Idle mixture screws Worn primary metering rods / jets Vaccuum leak Does it run rich or lean at idle? Ive had lean issues with choke closing the primary too early and killing the engine except at higher idle (both vac. pull off and electric). |

Re: won't idle
If the timing is too retarded it won't want to idle.

Re: won't idle
You probably have a bad vacuum leak some where. There is a large vacuum outlet at the rear of the carb. If this is not utilized or plugged it will cause this. Start with the idle mixture screws about 3 turns out. Then slowly turn them in till the engine slows down. Then open them about 1/2 turn. Did you set the float level correctly? You may have to raise it a little.
