Roughly, yes -

but you need to know the first portion of that numerical sequence.

Is it 100068? 200068? 400068?

Also - with respect to the build sequence number - the codes on the firewall, radiator support, hood, etc are usually just the last two, three or four digits of the daily (aka "manifest") build sequence, which is independent from the VIN. For example, my truck was "number 87" - but it could have been #87, #187, #1087, or #1,000,087. You wouldn't know without additional information. By way of reference, my VIN sequence is F317388 (notice how it does not match the daily build sequence number), and my truck was built in late September/early October of 1986 (during the '87 model year). That's relatively early in the model year but look how high the VIN sequence is already.

Lastly, trucks are built "roughly" in VIN order, but not precisely. They are shuffled coming out of the body shop before paint, and then again coming out of the paint shop before trim, based on option content, material availability and assembly line work load balance. Additionally, for some model years the GMC VINs start with 500001 and Chevy started with 100001, so there can be more than one VIN sequence working it's way through the plant and process.

FWIW -

That's very helpful, when taking apart the interior I noticed all of these parts with 69 on them....I'm guessing it's under 1k 69 because on the information on the door it said it was made in Dec of 76...

You are welcome - but I doubt your truck is within the first thousand - or the first couple hundred thousand.

See my post above - Flint had already built 217,387 Chevy's (not counting GMCs) by the end of September (the first full month of production) for the '87 model year.

It would vary based on assembly plant; Where was your truck built?

My point is that the operator would normally write the last two digits (or three or four - depending on how lazy they were feeling). In your case, it was easier for them to write "69" (and there may have been some assembly line humor going on there ) than it was for them to write the actual full manifest sequence number of "332,169" (for example)- or "2169" or "169".

Yep - you're a long ways from number 68.

VINs would have started at 100001, so about 105,000 Chevy trucks later.

Just as a reference the Flint final line rate was 60 jobs per hour - so that's roughly one completed truck every minute. Based on your numbers I'd say Fremont was a bit slower than that (or only ran one shift of production, rather than two or three). Additionally, the latest info I have on Fremont is for 1974, but at that point in addition to building Chevy and GMC trucks they were also building Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Buick Century and Pontiac Lemans models (which would dilute the truck VINs - spreading them out timewise).

It was made in flint.....I wonder what actual number it is.....be interesting to know at the least I checked a picture I had on my phone of the V.I.N. and the last numbers are 366535......69 isn't anywhere on my V.I.N.
weird...

Flint built (yay!) - so subtracting 100001 it would have been the 266,534th Chevy built (does not include GMC). There is no way to figure out what the actual sequence number is, barring finding the original manifest for that day (not likely since they were thrown away when done and since nobody really cared). I followed my truck down the line when it was built but it never occurred to me to grab a copy or a page from that document - until just now

Not weird - just random. As I mentioned above, there is no correlation between the VIN and the (daily) manifest build sequence number. Your VIN is F366535 and the sequence number would have been some number greater than that ending in "69". What we have here is two separate number series incrementing up sequentially but which are not tied to each other.

For example, that particular day might have looked something like this*:

Manifest sequence.........................................VIN................................................ ....Model
387469......................................................F366535................................. .........Chevy Pickup (your truck)
387470......................................................F366536................................. .........Chevy Pickup (266,535th Chevy built)
387471......................................................F521987................................. .........GMC pickup (521,987 - 500001 = only the 21,986th GMC built)
387472......................................................F366534................................. .........Chevy pickup
387473......................................................F366537................................. .........Chevy pickup
387474......................................................F521988................................. .........GMC pickup
387475......................................................F366538................................. .........Chevy pickup

...etc...

Wow, I that's pretty cool how you can tell what # it was just by doing some math.....it would have been so cool to have followed my truck down the assembly line like you did, did you order your truck special or did you just have the feeling "this is going to be mine" that day? I think it would have been fun to work in a GM plant ...

That's some cool information to know!

I ordered it special. After I placed the order I kept checking to see where it was going to be built. It was not something I could control so I was pleased when it was assigned to the Flint plant.

I got to the plant on the designated day as the truck was coming down out of paint into trim (about 4 pm). I followed it all the way through the process and drove it off the end of the line myself.

I left the plant at 1 am and by 5pm that same day it was at the dealership, 9 miles away....

Obviously, there is a lot more to it than that (as far as ordering and what happened prior to it getting built). You can read about that in my build/introduction thread, linked below (post #4) -

Re: glove box spec sheet gone, can new one be ordered up somewhere?

I am tight on time, so I just skimmed this post, but check this out.

www.vintagevehicleservices.com

I ordered the package for my truck and it came me everything to rebuild my spec sheet. I can't remember what I paid, but it broke down all the codes in my glove box
