I've personally owned 88-up Chevy's with 3.42, 3.73 & 4.10 gears. I would assume you could get something out of that range but I have not seen them in the half ton application, only in 14-bolts.

With a 2wd truck and relatively short tires I would go with the 3.42's. They are pretty common too so it won't be hard to find them.

keep in mind the 14 bolt also came in 5 lug, in the 454ss. i just bought a 72 stepside and luckily, it already had a 14 bolt installed from the PO.
