More 3/4 rear drum questions

Alright.. (taking 5 mins to condense my story).... OK!. Was using this awesome thread for research to replace my wheel cylinder .. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=283587 .. I bought the spindle socket with the 6 prongs on it. Its all good until this point. I found a huge nut after i took the shaft out. I tried using a large pair of channel locks to turn it. And DID seem loose but only maybe 1/16th of the circle. if that made sense ?*** Question is, do i just use my brute strength to turn it with the hopefully right size socket i bought for it?*** Just wasn't sure if there was another cotter pin like the front drums have that I'd rip in half if i just turned it.

First is right after i took the shaft out. Second is that nut. Third is the socket i bought.

If you look in side there is a washer with teeth legs on it that Keep it from backing off Use a flat blade screw driver and lift them up to clear the nut In my 1965 I have the same rear end and my has a nut with groves in it and yours dose not so All i can say is take a flash light and look in side to see if there is something that is catching the nut

Thanks for the logical method of looking at it. I'll definitely take another look at it sometime as when it decides to stop raining, just started tonight.. :/

I thought the usually the tabs are bend around the inner nut to keep it from backing off, and the outer nut is a lock nut (been a while).

I just use a chisel and tap the nut loose.

Alright. Went to Target and used that as an excuse to get a sweet looking flashlight.. . It was dry out and tried that huge socket for the nut. Socket was a hair to small but was still able to wedgie it in to turn it. I didn't see anything with the flashlight so i bit it and gave it a turn. I guess it was just stuck on something... i hope.... and came right off. I also didn't need the spindle socket. Just for the reference mine was a 1970 cst20 and not a 1971 3/4 ton as mentioned in the above thread.

hammer and brass drift will take them off to if you dont have the socket

Did something change on 72 models? I did not have to do any of this when I took my drums off. The drums are separate from the hubs on mine. Different Rear End?

Yes the dana's have removable drums and corporate rears have inboard drums you have to pull the hub.
