Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

now here's a stick to throw in the spokes...
I have a gray hubcap, blue bow tie. It fits on the lug rim, but is too shallow to go over the full floater hub. It looks just like the 3/4 ton ones above, but not as deep. The gray is kind of like a primer dark gray in color, but shiney.
Someone on here back in 04 or so found one NOS in the box just like it. The P/N came up as 69 only.
Any ideas on what it could have been for?
The only thing I can come up with is the optional 6 lug 16 inch rims. But I don't know if the hub cap retaining nubs were the diameter of a 1/2 ton wheel or a 3/4 ton wheel.
I wish I had a photo but I don't, and the cap is in my garage which is not close to here.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

Longhorn Man, I saw hub caps just like you described on a 69 1/2 ton 4x4 at the KC All Truck Nats back in Sptember 2010. Now I wish I would have taken a pic of them. I just figured they were painted or something other than OEM. The truck did have 16" tires too. 33 12.50's to be exact.

You know, I looked for a very long time to find 16" steel wheels when I had the wife's 69 K10 and I couldn't find anything except wagon wheels. I did get some newer 16" 6 bolt rallye wheel style for 88 up half tons, but they are not exactly the same as for our trucks.

The blue bowtie caps picture has a 1/2 ton silver cap (bottom row center) with a blue bowtie and am not sure about the 3/4 ton type as I have never had the silver one to compare but I do know the 69 up 1/2 ton wheels in 15", 16" and even 16.5's use the 10-1/2" inch outer retaining nub type caps. I just took this below reply from another recent thread on the years of bowtie colors link here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=444073

The silver caps with blue bowties were were available in both 1/2 and 3/4 ton versions in 1969. I don't know a whole lot about them besides that they were the early 69 model year first design (out before the bright caps) as GM was switching from the other 67/68 style caps, I have only seen these installed on a few trucks and they had matching silver wheels. I will take a look through my original GM brochures and pictures, I remember having a picture of a C/20 when new wearing these caps. Mel

woah! I didn't even notice you had one there... I 'think' mine is a bit more gray than silver... but who cares. This is a million times more info than I have ever gotten. Megga thanks!
I actually have (or at least had) 3 of them, but 2 of them were rattle can'd white and basicly ruined them

Yes, you are right, that is a very early production '69 3/4 ton hubcap. Somebody in the styling department must have blew it because it would fit the Eaton axle but not clear the Spicer rear axle. They discovered they needed two different hubcap styles to fit the two different rear axles. It looks very similar to a 1/2 ton hubcap but is the larger 12". Instead of using the shallow cap for front axle and Eaton only rear axle trucks, GM standardized on the deeper style all the way around.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

Found a early '69 3/4 ton about 15 years ago at a swap meet. It looks like the original design was to have it look like a 1/2 ton with concave (dished in) center. Top and back photo of the same cap.

This is most likely the reason it's listed in the master parts book as a "first design" early 69 cap while the later designs in both bright and painted were dished out to fit both the eaton and the dana rear axles. Mel

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

Were the concave (pushed in center) hubcaps used on the semi-floating axles (half tons) and the convex (pushed out center) hubcaps used on the full-floating axles (3/4 and 1 tons)?

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

I have two 3/4 ton GMC Stainless/chrome caps like this with the concave center that makes it look like a half ton cap. I bought them off of one of the board members from Longbeach Ca. I was told they were Longhorn Originals. I like them. I have seen these gray caps and they are floating around out here in our small desert town. My garage is decorated with over 50 hubcaps from 1967-1976. Another great thread.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

My personal mystery,
Over the years I have used several of the 69-75 styled 3/4 ton caps and the 76-91 3/4 ton caps on many of regular longbed and longhorn trucks 68-72. Some fit well and others won't fit. The 76-91 caps are obviously smaller in depth. Right now I own one 70 longhorn and one 72 longhorn. I have tried all my various caps on both to figure out this mystery and all I can come up with is the 16 inch rims on the 72 are different in depth allowing caps that don't fit the older truck to fit. I am wondering if there is a difference in the two different sets of GM 16 inch rims on both trucks. Both trucks have identical 16 inch rims and the 72 is an original, unmolested truck across the board and was purchased here in 72 at Bud Eyre Chevrolet, and I am the third owner so I trust these rims are original. The rear ends are identical as well, so I am still scratching my head. Who knows, maybe I am Hub Cap crazy from spending too much time with them out in the garage.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

Can anyone tell me if these hub caps are correct for a 1970 C10?

These came with a set of stock steelies that I bought off a local guy but I haven't seen any like them in the forum and so don't know if they're truck or van or aftermarket or what.

Thanks for the help!

Original 3/4 ton -1 ton single rims in these years ( '69-'72) is either 16.5" 1 piece rim or 16" 2 piece split rim. Are your 16" split rims? Dana or Eaton axles? If they are one piece rims, they are not the original rims. Some Chevy vans with 16" 1 piece 8 lugs came with different offset rims. You must have spent a lot of time in that yard in Pearsonville!

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

I have a set of the gray caps on my 74 Chevy. I had two regular 69-72 NOS caps and found two more for sale on ebay. I already had two with the blue centers so I bought these two and I thought atleast I would have a matching set. When they came out of the box they were gray. I didn't notice or could not tell in the picture of the auction. I put two on one side and two on the other, no one seems to notice except me! I'd still like to find a nice NOS stainless set though.

Thanks for the follow up on the rims. Yes, I have been out to Pearsonville yard a few times over the years. As of late it is just another Tax write off it seems for Pearsons Son. It is darn near impossible to go look or get parts from there anymore. The Hub Cap Grandma is still living out there and still sells here Hub Caps being over the age of 100 as I here it. Most of my caps are from fellow board members and from verious Junk yards from around Nevada/California. I do really like our 67-76 hub caps for our trucks.

I was told these are 69 or so IMPALA/BISCAYNE caps. Best way to verify for sure is to Google picture check them or EBAY them. These sites do have allot of identification material that is always very helpful. I have 4 of these by the way.

I will be getting some hub caps for my 67 3/4 ton truck soon , they will need to be painted. I was hoping somebody had pictures of one so I can match the red and black.
