Tips for replacing LCA bump stop on 79 C20
Did a search but couldnt find any info. Are there any tricks to fitting new factory style LCA bump stops ? New ones are from LMC but seem super tight. Arms are still on the truck.

Try dropping them into a pot of boiling water to make them a bit more flexible but if your going to running around with lowered springs your going to want to remove the factory metal mounting and use alternative ones.

Cheers mate. Have to get it passed a roadworthy before I go cutting the springs. Theres no stops on there at the moment. Was thinking of using HQ-WB lower stops which I can bolt on after removing the original bump stop bracket.

I wouldn't use HQ - WB lowers as they aren't really strong enough and tend to crack and bust off (been there done that), I'm using 1976 Toyota Hilux lower front rubbers in the front of mine, but they aren't reproduced aftermarket.
My crossmember used to rest on the metal pad of the factory bump stops, so I drilled out the spot welds removed the bracket, sliced, diced and strengthened it to retain the steering stop and bolted it back on. Off memory you will be looking for a bump stop which is between 40 and 50mm tall. The wrecking yard is your best friend most utes and 4wd's are the best source, I did the conversion on my dad's truck and I raided Datsun, Mitsubitsi and Navara's of their fronts and rears till I came up with something that worked. Not the best pics but you can sorta see what I have done with mine. This was when I was running cut down Volvo units. I didn't have springs installed in these shots as I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to the on the deck before I hit the bump stop, you can see the modified bracket in the second pic on the floor at the bottom of the photo

Thanks for the info. I thought hq-wb's would have been ok...but there is a fair weight difference between the 2. I'll check out some wreckers, need to get a steering coupling whilst im there. The more I investigate on my truck the more interesting things I find. Has new full height coils, but running shorter front shocks which is holding the front from going up higher (on max extension just sitting still). Both bump stops at the front, 1 was missing, the other was broken off about halfway. Guessing it had been much lower at some stage. Ride is well truck like. Keen to improve on this.
Going to start a project thread as a few boxes of goodies arrived from the usa. Have almost all the parts for the power steering conversion too. |
