Unhappy Stranded!

On my way home from a concert tonight, my truck caught fire! Turns out it's electrical...but I haven't found the cause. I had it towed to the mechanic, we'll see what happens. One thing's for sure though, I will be selling it. I'm tired of putting up with the consequences of lazy rigs done by the PO. So I might be w/o a 67-72 for a while.

PS- I guess that means I'm looking for a K10 or K20.

It was underhood, so fortunately there was no body damage/ messed up paint to deal with. As far as real damage goes, it's mainly confined to the wiring, which is just completely melted and trashed. I think the radiator might be damaged up near the overflow, but I think mechanically things are ok.

Thanks for the comments, all. Still pretty bummed about it, but I'm thankful it wasn't any worse. My buddy and I weren't hurt, so I'm counting my blessings.

Re: Stranded!

Just think man, if it was a newer truck, it would be totalled. My buddy had his 02 truck burn electrically after the PO put in some kind of alarm, totaled by insurance. I think it was a blessing, he was sick about it.

Re: Stranded!

New wiring harnesses from M&H and you'll be back inbusiness. When I bought my truck the PO had "rewired" a lot of stuff. There were wire "birdnests" all over the place. He even used Romex house wire in a couple of areas. I purchased an engine harness and a front clip harness from Wes and the mess of wiring is history.

The harnesses weren't that expensive and they were practically plug and play with all the correct factory-style connections, clips, and mounts. Even came with new plastic channels to run along the top of the firewall cowl and by the radiator.

Unless you're dead set on selling... it's repaiable all by yourself.

Re: Stranded!

Second the "Repair it yourself"
This is one of the easier, both in time and money repairs. And when you are finished, you will have the satisfaction of a job well done, but also still have a truck!

Good Luck

Re: Stranded!

i agree with fixing it. I have had my 68 for 4 years now. This winter we tore out the interior ( p.o. liked cloth everywhere ). It was a lot of work, but i have a great feeling of accomplishment. Along the way i had questions and the folks were great from the group. Hope to have the interior finished in a couple of weeks. Take a week off and get back and pick up the wrenches....Russ

Re: Stranded!

I would agree with repairing it myself...but I had planned on selling the truck within a couple of months anyways. My needs in a truck have simply changed. I no longer need a 2wd "fancy" truck ; since I just graduated college and am working on my family's farm, I need something in 4x4 that I'm not afraid to get dirty.

I am planning on getting it fixed, just in the case of expediency and the need to get another vehicle that I can use, I think it's going to be wiser for me to have the mech. do it. Gonna cost me for sure, though...

Re: Stranded!

Having the mechanic do it will prolly cost as muich or more as buying new harnesses.

hahah.....i will always run 2wd's. rides so nice and easier to work on. just give me a limited slip....good as an open axle at each end.

i like my truck to look pretty (especially when i go to car show) but it's a truck and i'm not fazed by a little dirt. i live on a dirt road full of potholes so it is never trailer-queen clean.

I could argue with that. Having a wheel at each end of the vehicle is usually a better situation. That's why people use 4wds and swear by them. Posi rear is great, but with both rear wheels in the same mud hole just means sit and spin two. A drive wheel up front would be an asset. To each his own, just as this feller feels he needs 4wd on the farm. He seems to feel the need for a more appropriate vehicle for his next step in life. I believe the emphasis was on fancy, meaning a light duty street cruiser as opposed to a heavy duty work truck.
Good luck with it. An engine and/or headlight wiring harness is an easy fix. Is it roached into the plug (back of fuse block)?

Re: Stranded!

I had my truck completely rewired by one of my technicians it took him a good three days it was simply the BEST upgrade I did to my truck.
