Black Iron Pipe?

I'm trying to figure out how to mount my top bag mounts and I saw some black iron pipe at HD that would seem to do well. Can anyone tell me if this stuff is strong enough to put into a suspension?? If anyone has any other advise about some type of strong pipe, I'm all ears. I have a step notch that I now need to mount some bag brackets off of, need to use circular pipe that is strong. Thanks.

Re: Black Iron Pipe?

I've read a little bit and I think that Black iron pipe is strong enough. Hell, I've read where people built little rat rods and framed it out of it! We will see. Thanks lolife for the reply. Think I will just try it and test it out the best way I can. We will see!

Re: Black Iron Pipe?

Black iron pipe is not structural steel (Home Depot/Lowes stuff).

Re: Black Iron Pipe?

You're getting black iron confused with pipe - A lot of offroaders build stuff out of Schedule 40 pipe - here's some more info:
Poop Pipe Thread

Don't use black pipe - you'll hurt someone. If you could promise us it would only be yourself and not an innocent bystander when your sh!t breaks - that's one thing. Don't put others' lives on the line.

Re: Black Iron Pipe?

The term "Black Iron Pipe" means almost nothing to most home builders. Truth is there are a lot of different grades of pipe. Some are good for structural applications and some are not. Some are weldable, some are not. You don't necessarily have to use DOM, but you do need a weldable quality pipe with decent elongation and tensile / yield strength.

How do you know what to use? The pipe should have ASTM numbers stenciled on the side of it. Should be something like "ASTM A-53-B" or "ASTM A-106-B" or "ASTM A-106-C".

Look at some long lengths of the pipe, reply to this thread as to what is stenciled and I will look it up for you.

If it doesn't have the specification written on it, don't use.

Hope this helps.

HFW means high frequency welded

Is the pipe you bought 1" pipe?
1 = 1" pipe
PLL = Manufacturer
TESTED 700/lb/IN2 = 700 psi pressure test
There should be a specification though. You need more information to really know what you have.

Re: Black Iron Pipe?

im sure rat rods were built from that cheap pipe... the concept for most rat rods is "cheap"... cheaper than these trucks...

Re: Black Iron Pipe?

Don't use it. A-53-A is not for structural use. If it was A-53-B I would use it.

In the fab shop I worked at we would use A-53 Grade A for stuff like handrailing.

Re: Black Iron Pipe?

Call Ryerson Steel, they have a location in Mobile: http://www.ryerson.com/gulfcoast/

Ask them if the sell to walk in customers, or if they don't, ask them for the name of one of their local customers that does.

And their on-line stock list is second to none. Check it out here: http://www.ryerson.com/stocklist/l-843.html

Good luck and Happy Trails!
