Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
I am painting my engine with Plastikote Chevy Orange engine enamel. I have spent hours sanding and cleaning the engine so I am ready to paint. I started putting on the first couple of coats and it seems really thin. The paint shop owner told me not to prime the engine because the paint will hold up better without it. I figured I would let it dry for a few days and then apply some more coats. Everyone I have talked to said orange paint is just really transparent. Should I go and buy primer to put on first, or should I let it dry and put some more coats of the enamel on? Please give me some advice.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
I have always just sprayed the engine paint on, no primer. The paint is thin and you have to be carefull not to get runs.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
no primer.
No reason to wait a couple days either. Wait till the paint is tacky, then give it another light coat. If you let it dry all the way, then you'll need to give it a light sanding to spray over it. |

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
VHT is better. It's not watery like Plasikote.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
Plastikote here too... at least 3 coats. Sometimes more. Never used a primer.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
What's the application for the 427?? Cool looking, but that pump may not fit under the hood...
Maybe in the also cool looking motorhome/bus in the background? Last edited by 72lb4x4; 05-25-2011 at 10:57 PM. |

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
POR is the only way to go. I have used it on engines for years, still looks brand new.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
Back to square one. The paint shop said I bought a bad batch of paint. I stripped all the paint off with aircraft stripper and a pressure washer. I am down to the bare block now. I ordered the POR 15 kit. I will never use Plastikote again even if I did get a bad batch. It was like spraying on an orange tinted clear coat. I will keep you updated on my progress. I could use some POR 15 tips.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
Here's the number one POR-15 tip in my experience: wear rubber gloves, that stuff will be on your skin or whatever forever.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
I agree. Just follow the instructions that come with the kit, make sure that engine is CLEAN. The marine clean that comes in the kit is like simple green x 100, it works very well. Wear gloves and a respirator mask, even if you brush it on. You will be very happy with the results.

Re: Chevy Orange Engine Paint Question????
I finally finished my engine. It turned out great. POR 15 is a little hard to apply, but overall its a great finish.
