Cooling fans questions
Hey guys I just wanted to get your guys input on some electric fans I bought, I bought two 12in fans the cfm of each fan is 1550 I will be hooking these up on my 71 c10 with a 350/350 I will be installing the relay harness with a temp sensor that will kick the fans on when the temp hits 180 n kick off at 165 or 170, will these be enough to cool my truck? And do I need to wire the fan to pull? Not having a fan on the water pump what will I gain from it anything? Thanx guys!

Thats the set-up i have and it cools great, never gets over 200. have mine pulling, don't know about the hp gain, probably small but every little bit helps! also installed a new 4 row rad. and have a bored 402 c.i. smallblock with around 10-1 compression so i need the cooling.

Cool thanx, I was gonna run 14in fans it would of covered the whole radiator but I didn't know if it be too much. Nice motor btw.

what should my truck be running at temp wise? 180 185? i have the temp sensor mounted in the intake manifold by the water neck will this give me a good reading or should it be in the head?

My recommendations from an engineering standpoint is to locate the thermostat somewhere in the radiator near the tank that leads to the engine. The point of the thermostat in the intake is to regulate coolant temperature in the block. The point of the fans is to cool the radiator.
The fan should only run when truck speed is too low for ram air to cool the radiator. If the thermostat is installed in the block/head then it would be possible for the fan to run when truck speed is sufficient to cool the radiator. This will negate any HP gains or MPG savings by going electric. |
