What was the textured coating used originally in the wheel wells?

Re: Coating in wheel wells?

what about a textured coating on the frame and wheel wells ? was this used in the 70's to fight off against rust? was it put on by the owner? it almost looks like fiberglass matt.. i'm sure it is not.. anyone know what this stuff is? and will it be a problem in the future? looks to be like something applied to fight off rust like sprayed on as if you would spray on a fire retardent on steel beams... thanks

Re: Coating in wheel wells?

3M makes a spray-in rubberized undercoating. Comes in a rattle can. Probably not as durable as bedliner though.

Re: Coating in wheel wells?

I have always been told not to use undercoating b/c it will hold moisture, but I don't know if this is true?? I'm also leaning towards a spray in type bed liner, that seems a lot more durable.

A textured coating on the frame is probably overspray from dealer or aftermarket rustproofing, especially in Michigan. Google Ziebart if you want... I think he was the original rustproofer.

I am going with UPOL raptor polyurethane bedliner.Comes in 2 part kit mix and spray on. The original was cracked and peeled off in big chunks. I'm done with the prep clean/scrape/kerosene. I hope this holds up as good as the original, 40 years later.
