Heater Core Leak HELP
Alright well I saw that my heater core was leaking so I figured Id pull it out and see what the problem was, well in the process the whole thing cracked in half, so I bolted it back on....I found where the leakin was, but I dont know how to fix it, it is leaking from these spots in the pictures.....Is there a easy way to seal these back up?

Re: Heater Core Leak HELP
You'll need to either have that core repaired or buy a new one. Most radiator shops can repair heater cores, that's the route I would start with. Get a quote from them, then compare that to a reconditioned unit from Checker - Napa or a similar place.
In the mean time you can simply by pass the heater core if you still need to drive the truck. Just unhook one of the hoses at the heater core and hook it up to the manifold / water pump where the other heater hose is connected. Last edited by lakeroadster; 05-29-2011 at 11:54 AM. |

Re: Heater Core Leak HELP
Same thing was wrong with my truck when I bought it. Did the bypass for a week until I could replace it.
New core is $30 at NAPA - had to do a little of filing on mine for the mount to work right, but no big deal. Pretty straightforward repair. There is one bolt that is blocked by the inner fender. Some people say that they can pull it without dropping the inner fender, but I wasn't able to do it on mine. Also had to loosen the pass. side hood hinge to get the heater box out. There are bolts both inside the cab and outside in the engine compartment. Some people have a difficult time with the bypass cable retainer (small retainer clip that you have to remove once the box can be pulled away from the firewall), but mine went pretty easily with a long set of needle nose pliers. I think it took me around 2 hours to do mine.

Re: Heater Core Leak HELP
If you do go the replace route keep in mind that NAPA has basically gone the way of the other auto parts stores with imported parts for the older vehicles. I haven't had much luck with their parts for my 68 lately.
The best bet is to have a radiator shop repair it if it's not completey rotted out due to rust. |
