my first blazer
Well, after 20 years of playing with these old trucks, I fianally got my first '72 blazer. This is my first 4wd of this vintage as well, so I'm sure I'll have plenty of dumb questions for you guys.
I bought it from the original owner, whose father bought the truck for her when she graduated from high school. It needs rocker boxes, rockers and partial floor pans as well as a few patches in the bed floor. It is plain jane, six cylinder/automatic with power steering and brakes. I'm actually digging the six and plan to leave it because it is so quiet. The SPID lists no option for the engine, so would it be a 250 or 292? The owner's husband said 292. It needs a valve cover gasket, so would it matter what displacement I tell the guy at the parts counter? Am I correct in assuming 3.73 gears? The plan right now is to fix the rust and leave it pretty much as it is, including the dark green paint. It's not olive, but the non-metallic color that looks like a water department truck. I'd like to find some stock 8" wheels (wouldn't everybody?) with dog dish caps for it. I'll get some pics up soon.

Re: my first blazer
Welcome, Thats a great purchase. The engine should be a 250 ci inline six, if original, the 292 ci was not an option. For Blazer 250 was standard and they offered a 307 or 350 as options. The 292 was offered in the heavier trucks of the time. As for the wheels, become a subscribing member (it's only $25 a year) then post a want to buy ad in the 67-72 truck section. That's how I found mine, it may take a little time.

Re: my first blazer
Welcome from a little west of you. Gotta see some pics. I like your plan of sticking with the 250.

Re: my first blazer
The 250 isn't a bad motor. I had one in a 70 3/4 ton (it's a long story). If you're not planning any hauling or heavy-duty off-roading, it should suit you fine.
Oh, and welcome to the wonderful world of Blazers. It took me a lot of years and a lot of old Chevys to get here, too. Last edited by truckster; 06-01-2011 at 02:15 PM. |

Re: my first blazer
look at the covers on the side of the motor ( distributor side ) if they are around 4 inches tall its a 250 if they are 6 inches tall its a 292.
