Rear end swap candidate?

Looking for a 5 lug rear end swap for my 66 Short Step. From what I'm reading it looks like 71-72 trucks are the only years that will be a bolt in? Those are pretty rare in the junkyards around here. can anyone confirm this? I know people have used 73-87 and even heard of s-10 rear ends being used... thanks!

Why not just swap to 5 lug axles and brakes?

Cost, mostly. I'm also planning on doing a disc brake conversion on the back, so trying to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Re: Rear end swap candidate?

You are correct about 1971 and 1972 chevy/gmc rear ends. They are the only direct bolt in there is. Other than that you can purchase a kit from one of the classic truck sites. The cost is about $150.... and you have to weld them on the new axle. Don't quote me on the price its been awhile since I was going that direction.
Good luck with your search.
