305 is out 350 is Almost all the way in! (305 autopsy photo's inside!)

yesterday, a buddy and I yanked the 305 out, and got the new roller 350 in place. The hard stuff is done, all thats left now are the driven accessories, intake, distributor, one exhaust manifold, and the valve covers. I really hate to put those strangled 305 "log" manifolds back on, but I'm building on a budget! the 350 looked Very clean inside.. one challenge tho.. the hole was there for a mechanical fuel pump, but there's no eccentric on the cam.. so I guess I've gotta run an electric pump.
We did tear into the 305 too.. Needed the oil pan for the 350, and popped the driver's side head off just for curiousity.. oil pan was full of sludge.. and 4 pieces of piston skirt!! and pulling the head revealed #7 piston is missing 1/3 of it's top ring land! and #7 had good compression! not to meantion the cylinders have a huge ridge at the top of the bore.. this thing was GONE

Re: 305 is out 350 is Almost all the way in! (305 autopsy photo's inside!)

Check Bore diameter - stock 305 should be 3.735 and by the looks of it those pistons look like low grade replacement die cast aluminum (they look like SpeedPro 454NP). If the bore measures 3.765 (+0.030) someone been inside that little poor 305 before and did a half job - replacing OE pistons with non eutectic grade pistons. A truck engine should be built with higher quality pistons capable of withstanding long duration power output periods. A dish piston simply does not have crown material to dissipate heat!

Question - is that Harbor Freight cherry picker you are using to pull that 305 out. Did you have enough lift to clear radiator support??

Well, I really don think the engine has ever been apart... No stamping numbers on the rods, and the head gaskets were thin steel, not composite replacements... I could be wrong tho... The picker is equivalent to a harbor freight one... I bought it at a "tool tent sale" about 8 years ago.. If you rig it up right, the engine clears the rad. Support fine.

Thanks for info - I have similar cherry picker (came from the same commie Chinese factory) but my truck has 3 inch body lift and 33" inch tall tires. I'll putting replacing my tired 350 with a freshly built motor in near future.

That 305 is gross!!! What all are you doing to the 350? At least cleaning it all up and making it look nice, right? Doing any internal work to it?
