Be careful out there
Just a reminder to be careful i just god scared to death i was ajusting carb when i dropped the screwdriver hit the fan clocked me in the head and stuck in my hood. I just couldnt believe it i thought i cracked my head open then thoughts of it sticking in my eye im still shaking so be careful out there

I am always worried about stuff like that when the engine is running.
I have a flex fan and the stories about fan blades breaking off and cutting up hoods always flash through my head when I'm under there. Glad you're not hurt! |

thanks i was gonna get a flex fan but dont have to hear stories a friend of mine had it happen lucky he was driving not under the hood

It'll really scare the pee out of you if you reach in and your finger gets smacked by the fan.
Happened to me 3 times now, and I have been lucky so far, every time I have been hit on the finger nail and not flesh. |

ive had that happen once with the fan, i think it got me on the knuckle though.. somehow it didnt cut me, the ford was just warning me not to touch it i guess

I was doing the same thing, fine tuning the idle mixture when I fumble fingerd the screwdriver and it got in the fan and took out the radiator. That bent screwdriver is hanging on my tool box just for a reminder.

yeah - i've gotten my finger in the fan before, and it smarts, but it never broke the skin.
wow - that whole screwdriver thing has me rethinking things! whew - you are lucky! thanks for the tip! jewels.

Yeah me too: While rowing thru the gears on my muncie with a hurst lock out, I heard a piece of tin hit the ground. I pulled over and popped the hood and found one of the fan blades had sheared off and took out the top of my shroud and there it was sitting on the intake manifold, I have not driven it since and the next time I do it will be to go to an auto parts store for a new fan and glue to fix the shroud!!!!thank god it hit the shroud and did not go through the hood.........

I hear you Longhormail! I wasn't thinking and dipped my hand down while i was reaching back from tuning my carb. I didn't want to look down, I thought I cut the tip of my finger off it hurt so bad. It turned out I had a little gash above my fingernail. I'm usually lucky with stuff like that.

There are accidents like dropping a tool in the wrong place while the engine is running. And then there is downright stupidity. I remember a deckhand working on a fishing boat wanted to check the tension on the alternator belt...while the engine was running. It ran his fingers right thru the pulley and messed him up.

well i was trying to turn over my motor with a socket (engine off) when the socket slipped off and my thumb got sliced right open by the flex fan, those things friggen sharp!! man did it bleed, should of gotten stiched but being the Macgiver that I am I just stuck super glue in there and kept working.

Call me a puss puss, but I refuse to come in from the front of the truck when it's running. Currently there's no shroud as I'm still balls-deep in the paint / assembly portion of the project, but if it's running, you can bet your sweet a$$ I'm coming in from the side to do something.

I have the dual electric fan, but that wasn't what got me.....It was the belt! I was tuning the carb, and was more worried about the fan when my arm grazed the belt. Kinda like road rash, but only a half inch wide!

did the same thing like a year ago. I was tightening up the radiator hose and lost the screw driver, and my fanschourd, and the screw driver stuck in the radiator. Bad day

Thanks for the reminder.
I have a constant reminder because when I was 15 I found out that a metal fan connected to a running big block is just a bit stronger than my fingers. After a trip to the emergency room and a few too many stitches, these phantom pains are still around, something about cutting off nerve endings, whatever that means

Being 6'1" it's easy to reach the carb and what not from the front. The problem with that is when you're leaning in that far, the parts of you exposed to the fan are your neck and chest. I'm good with having no screwdrivers sticking out of my neck.:p

I hear you guys. I'm 6' 4" so I can lean in no problem but when you lean in with a sweat shirt and the strings start hitting the fan that scares ya. I also know a guy that was working on a bulldozer from underneath (running) and shoved his hand in the fan. Cut it off. Ouch!

jewels, i know what its like having to come in from the side to work... (see pic, im only 5'7") but the time i got my finger in the fan i was coming from the front, only time its happened so i'd have to say yup to your question

You have to stick your finger in a lot farther from behind to get the sharp edge instead of slant, and it moves so fast it's hard to get it in that far before it gets pushed out... fortunately.... When I set the timing on the IH, I'm always paranoid about the belts and all being so close to my hands... that's one time when I'm glad the dizzy is in the back on the chevy... well I guess it's the only time, but anyways... |
