72 k5 wiring

Im doing under the hood wiring, and i have A question.

There is a voltage regulator going from the fuseblock, alternator, and junction block. my question is what does it do? and if i get a different alternator can i remove it?

i also can snap a few pics if needed

It is an externaly regulated alternator setup. My 72 had it also. I switched to a "one wire" internally regualted alt (140amp) and simply by-passed/didn't use that old dude
In this pic you can see the red wire off the back, it goes straight to the batt, 8ga wire I think I used...keep my batts nice and charged.
