Ticking Noise?

I have a 72 C-10 and recently it has developed a ticking noise. When you first start driving it it's not appearent then after about 20 min when I am coming back into the neighborhood you can hear it.

I have replaced the wheel bearings and it's still there.
I have checked the flex plate for cracks and no cracks.
I have shook the drive shaft and all the u-joints are tight.
The speedometer does not bounce like it's broke.
I have looked all over the truck and nothing is rubbing so I just do not know what the heck it is.
I do not think it is coming from the motor or the exhaust since you cannot hear it while the motor is idling or when you rev it up.

Any ideas or sugestions would greatly be appreciated since I do not have the money right now to take it to the shop. The IRS took it all

Thanks for your time.

Re: Ticking Noise?

Tough to say without being there.

You can narrow it down by going down the road at a constant speed, then put it in neutral and let the engine to to idle. If the sound continues at the same pace/speed, it isn't engine (which would have changed from cruising speed to idle).

Along the same lines, if it makes the sound when stopped, it would be engine related, not drivetrain.

Re: Ticking Noise?

Check exhaust manifolds or headers for leaks. A lot of "ticks" turn out to be exhaust leaks. Could also be a lifter starved for oil.

Re: Ticking Noise?

When I'm looking for mystery noises, it sometimes helps to have someone else drive so I can move around a little and concentrate on locating the noise.

Re: Ticking Noise?

Not to sound like a smart A...

But, have you made sure that none of the tires picked up a bolt or something?
I have had this where it happened to me, where I only noticed the tick/click noise when the tires were warm.

Or does the ticking noise occur when the truck is sitting still and idling?

Do you have cast iron exhaust manifolds? If you do, do you have a thermostatic flap on the passenger side? Mine ticks when it gets warm.

What about the belts, have you checked their condition? I have seen where if one has a chunk out, it will make a clicking noise.

Have you checked to see if the noise could be coming from the water pump or AC pump? (If you have AC).

Drum brakes? If so, pop the drums off and see if a spring has snapped. I had one snap, and it dangled down and clicked on the inner bumpy section of the drum. For me, this made a clicking noise.

Just a few suggestions...

Re: Ticking Noise?

This was my mystery ticking noise, and it turned out to be the Torque Converter.

Re: Ticking Noise?

My cavalier was ticking like a bastard and I thought it was the timing chain tensioner. Turns out it was a loose spark plug...just a thought. Also found where the chipmunks are chewing on the rubber boots and wires ....I will take care of that this weekend. The chipmunks I mean

Re: Ticking Noise?

Thanks everyone for the input. I took the truck out for a spin as I was coming back I did pick up an exhaust leak at the collector I'm not kidding (Just GREAT!!) but as I was coming back into the neighbor hood I heard the ticking I took it out of drive let it coast and the ticking went away I put it back in gear and it went away.

It also sounds like the noise in the video that was posted. So based on that I believe it is in the transmission. What do you think?

Again thanks to everyone for your input and your time.
