well, its alive

ryan, will and i started her up wed and broke the cam in. i've been messing with stuff the past couple days to get it back on the road. we didn't have any major problems, it all went pretty smooth. i've got a couple small leaks i got to take care of, but i guess thats to be expected when you have it that far apart.

i have to say that it sounds pretty wild. and i love the solid cam at idle. i know the solid is gonna require more maintanence than the hyro but i'm glad i did it. it revs up so fast its not funny. its gonna be hard to keep it under 3k for breakin period. barley tap the throttle and the rpms shoot way up. i'm gonna have to do somethin aobut the exhaust though, its way to loud now. took it out for a few laps around the neighborhood tonight but didn't take it over 30 b/c the alignment is so bad it darts to the right. the steering is soooooooo much better now with the new box and pump and poly fornt end kit it rides nice. well thats all for now, i'll update you guys once i get an alignment and can actauly kinda drive it

Awesome!! It's maiden voyage and you made it back home in one piece. I know it's gonna be hard to stay out of it for awhile, but it won't hurt to "jump on it" a little. I always say, break it in, like you plan to drive it. Just keep it below, say 5K. I still can't believe it went so smooth for the intitial fire up. I guess it's like they say, practice makes perfect. It's been a while since I've messed with solids, I have to say, I miss it. You have to love the way solids react, it's completly different from hydraulics. Plus then you have that distinct "clackity, clackity" that just screams power.

I have the valve cover gaskets in the truck and will bring them to you on Sunday.

Its good to hear you got it running ok. After it gets broken in are you gonna dyno it so we can see what it makes?

Why is the exhaust too loud? Was it open headers or through an actual exhaust? I felt the same way when I got the 350 in. Just wait until you get it in traffic and somebody tries to push you. Man is that hard not to do it, but.....you just have to. So what's next?

What brand Cam did you go with? I am shopping for a cam also. Do you recomend the solid?

it has full exhaust on it, headers, 2.5 inch pipe and 40 series flows, but this thing breaths so much that its just really loud at idle. had the same exhaust on the hopped up 350 and its qutie a bit louder with the 408. i think i'll eventualy go to borlas or edlebrocks but not any time soon. i really don't plan to put it on the dyno or be hard on it for a while. i just want to cruize it around. i'm not the kinda person who drives wild and does burn outs all over the place, i just like to know i have the power at hand, lol. i also want to go to a different ignition setup and carb before i really get into it hard, and i don't have any money for that stuff for a while, lol. so for now its just rumblin to the local cruize spots with an ear to ear grin.

the cam is a comp cams 274 extreme energy, the solid version. i really like the qualities of the solid, like the way it sounds and the fast reving of it. it does require a bit of maintenance, i plan to check the lash every oil change or about every 3 months. you'll need a good set of poly locks to keep the lash set, but my arp ones were only 50 bucks for all 16.

Revs real fast?? Like how fast is fast... hehe I wanna see it on video

When I camed my truck it was a lot louder than it is now with a stock cam. Same exhaust and everything but it was a lot louder with the 270 magnum I had in it. That cam has a little bit of lope and you can actually hear the pistons fire for a split second with the exhaust valve opening.

All the motors I have ever broken in easy actually pissed me off, I wore a cam out in 2 motors. The next time I broke the cam in and then drove it normal, but wasn't scared to romp on it. When I rebuild my current BBC and added the solid to it, I raced it twice the next day. It is still clean inside.

Break it in like your gonna drive it!! That is the time the rings seat by being pushed out wards. Do a search on the net..you will always get mixed opinions..but every new car/ motor I have dealt with...i romp it immediately. Never had a problem yet

Well... whats the full specs on your motor. I wanna play with it on Desktop dyno and see what kinda numbers you might be throwing around

i actualy built close to the same motor CHP built awhile ago. a few differences like they had 9.7:1 and mine is 10:1, and they used a hydrualic 274 and i used a solid. they put it on an engine dyno and got 438 hp and i think 498 tq. here is the article

there is a link at the bottum to the dyno results. i figure i'm somewhere around 425-450 hp and 500 or so tq. i think i put it in dd2000 and it said only like 410 hp or something.

yeah i hope so. i'm jsut going to keep putting wider tires on it until i can get it to hook up. i'm waiting until i get the alignment and the studs for the oil pan so i can stop a small leak before i lay into some and see what it will do.
