I have a guy looking a turbo 400 I have out of a BB truck and he wants to put it behind a 327. He wants to make sure it will mount up OK. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Randy

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
i took the chevy small block out of my 74 and swapped it with a 454. I made a few mods to other stuff but the engine and motor(s) all mated up nicely. truck had a th400 transmission and everything worked out fine for me.

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
I think the only "possible" issue could be that some flexplates have a dual bolt pattern for the converter and some don't. Seems like you can run into a problem there but I'm not an auto tranny expert. In other words the converter might not fit the bolt holes in the exsisting flexplate. Just remember seeing different things like that when I was researching my stall speed and applications.

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
I think you can bolt it in and go.

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
You're perfectly fine, almost all Turbo 400's are the same except for other GM ones, like Pontiac, etc.

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
chevy has one bolt pattern, buick, olds, pontiac, and caddy all have another bolt pattern.
On the chevys, small block, big block, inline 6 (230/250/292 family) and the 2.5 4 cylinder... they all have the same bellhousing. |

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
Well I did look it up and there is in fact 2 different bolt patterns for the converters. Is this not an issue with OE? I'm not talking bellhousing.

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
i would suspect that since the TH350 didn't come out till 69, and I think the last year for the 327 was 68 (i know that to be true in trucks) then most, if not all 327 flex plates would be drilled for the larger TH400 pattern.

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
It does take more poop to turn a TH400... it's why it was behind the big blocks from the factory. So it could handle the torque. I think it takes somewhere around 40 or 50 more hp to spin a TH400 than a TH350.

Re: turbo 400 tranny question
I have heard that it takes about that to "turn" one.....not that much more than a TH350. They have some resistance too, just not as much.
