Need some posi parts help.
Hey folks,
Bought an posi unit (Ebay) 12 bolt for my 68 and It showed up as the dirtiest nastiest worked thing I ever got on e-bay or any place used. Nasty disgusting. Bearings shot also so I took it apart cleaned it all got a shim pack to tighten things up a bit. I took out the spider gears and found one shim/bearing behind the gear cracked. What should I do and is their a fix for this that doesn't cost as much as a new unit. |

Re: Need some posi parts help.
Did some reading and phone time today. Most 73 up posi units are very light duty many break the case. Seems the Eton style or Eaton posi with springs and clutches used to chatter a lot. So they switched to lighter duty springs and clutch material.
Found my old 12 bolt truck posi doesn't and never had carbon friction discs. (I thought they had been burned off.) They have a uniform cross hatch pattern texture. THey were/are the noisy ones. The clutch plate type can be tailor built per individual with springs shims ect. Like 800 lbs springs vs 300 lbs. Still need the washer/bearing. |

Re: Need some posi parts help.
I did and I have the race bearing Install Kit with the 3.73 gear set from Jegs. Randy's was very helpful on the phone. It was a non tech guy and he knew his ****. I tried to hang on for the tech guy but Couldn't.
They sell the whole every thing including new cases. But better off to buy new if you get that far. They are fully rebuild-able and up grade-able. Like the 800lb springs might squeal around corners. I think its a class thing for some racing. New clutches with carbon discs are out there but for about what I paid for this. Now if I can find an assembly manual that has specs for clutch pack thickness. |

Re: Need some posi parts help.
Clutch disks are considered worn out at anything less than 0.67
If you've got .68/.70 and a clear hex pattern, you should be good. |
