Lift on 70
I installed a 4" lift, front springs rear shackle kit from ORD. How many of you out there are running Pinion shims?
IMy truck has a problem when hits a bump acts like the front tire has a wobble or such. The shims were on the springs when I got them(used) and the truck is doing it both with the shims and without. My ball joints are only a couple of years old, and it did not act this way before lift was added. thanks Ron

Re: Lift on 70
Raised steering arm that mounts on the knuckle.

Re: Lift on 70
Called bump steer. Straighten out the alignment of drag link. This should fix the problem. If not. What size tires you running. Steering stabilizers should be installed as well. Hope this helps.

Re: Lift on 70
Is your suspension nice and tight? Lift the wheels and see if they have any play from side to side or up and down. May be the ball joints or bearings. I'd hesitate to say your truck would suffer from bump steer if you are "only" running 33s and 4" of lift.
The steering stabilizer will keep the truck from wandering all over the road, but again, I haven't seen a "need" for one with 33s and 4 inches of lift. The raised steering arm should be enough to get the truck to do what it is supposed to.

Re: Lift on 70
check all other steering components and bearing in the front end. i just put a 4in lift in in my 70 and it was impossible to keep strait, but the tie rod ends were shot and wheel bearing were loose

Re: Lift on 70
It's not bump steer, which cannot occur with a straight-axle vehicle. Bump-steer is a change in the "toe" measurement that happens during suspension travel.
What you are experiencing it likely what is referred to as "death wobble". It comes from a combination of several factors. Virtually any looseness of parts that are associated with the front wheels contributes to this, or makes it worse. (wheels bearings, tie-rod ends, ball-joints, drag link ends, etc. as far as "hard parts") Then there are a few "adjustments" like caster and toe-in that can get it started. The short (front to back) drag-link doesn't help matters either.....This is at least part of the reason that "cross-over" conversion is so popular.

Re: Lift on 70
Sorry, roll steer. As wiki says, for simple analysis it's OK to assume roll steer and bump are the same thing.
Bottom line is. You gotta make sure that drag link is straight. Most commonly done by a raised steering arm. |

Re: Lift on 70
I have a 71 with a 4" lift and 33's with out any steering corrections. The drag link is at a pretty steep angle. I bought it this way. It is all over the road when I get on and off the gas and every bump I hit with the left tire. I ordered a raised steering arm hoping it fixes my steering. Someday I want to do crossover when I can afford it.
