70 stepside in the san bruno gas pipe explosion

i've been meaning to post this. i'm sure every one saw the gas pipe explosion in san bruno, ca. on the news. i guess this 70 stepside was parked in the garage of one of the houses. the whole house burnt down. it looks like the roof fell in on it. it was a factory black big block ps, pb, a/c, and i believe it had a tach. hard to tell what else it had. bill at vintage chevy got it back in october and we basically threw it all in the scrap metal bin. the only thing that he kept is the engine block. it got so hot that the center of the frame lays flat on the ground. i heard the owner also has another truck that was parked in the driveway that had something blow a hole in the drivers door about the size of a bowling ball? -jacob

Re: 70 stepside in the san bruno gas pipe explosion

What a shame..I notice that the door handles are missing, wonder if they were taken off after the fire or before. They wouldn't be any good after this much heat got to them.. as far as that goes most all metal parts have all the temper taken out of them,,,but I am only guessing ., maybe Jake knows the answer.

That's a hell of a way to chop the top and lower the truck. Sucks to see.

None of the sheetmetal would be any good after a fire like that. Looks like the fire got so hot that the transmission case is melted and the tailshaft housing is completly gone! Very sad indeed. Joseph

Re: 70 stepside in the san bruno gas pipe explosion

all the sheet metal was warped. everything non steel melted, door handles, carburetor, tires and rims, tranny case, etc. i'm guessing he had aluminum wheels on it. you can see the lug nuts are still on the wheel studs. around the right front drum you can see the steel from the inside of the tire. the heat even warped the right big block engine mount. it's hard to tell in my cell phone pics, but the gas tank is all swelled up. other than popping the hood, the first 11 pics is how we got it. -jake

Looks to me the cause was a cooling system failure. ;-D
