Doug it sounds like your stock steel wheels are the 88 up models which do have more backspace. You would need truck wheels for the 87 and down and measure one of them. I think the 6" rims are in the 3 to 3 1/2" bspace range. Some guys also use aftermarket spacers behind their wheels to get an additional 1/4" or so clearance.
