aftermarket steering column
Got an Ididit column for a good deal, now I need to get it in the truck. I have a 3 1/2 inch drop column support. Anybody have good info on the "through the floor" set up? I am considering getting some sheet metal and cuting to fit the original area then using the flaming river column mount (floor) with ball type area where it passes through the fire wall. However, I have not done this before....anyone with advice...?

Re: aftermarket steering column
Unless you have made a radical seating change or the way the stock column fits doesn't work with the rest of the steering I'd keep it in pretty close to the stock angle.
The two main things are still, a comfortable driving position and having the steering shaft between the bottom of the column and the steering box be with the least amount of tight angles. We have all seen photos of steering shafts in modified vehicles with U joints that have real tight angles and are in a constant bind. |

Re: aftermarket steering column
Justin, I got the ball for floor and the column drop locally for a good deal (one of the few things I can get here locally). However what I need now is the u-joints, shaft, and to understand the best way to cover the floor area I have - is there a floor area "filler"? Seems like sheet metal would be easy too. I will call you either today or tomorrow. Thanks.

Re: aftermarket steering column
I just did a filler and a ball mount. Check out my build thread. It was for a 52 though but it might give you an idea.

Re: aftermarket steering column
I just did this, and i used unisteer universals, if it is tight, use the flaming river universals, they are smaller and will give you more clearance, I had to notch the frame a little..I can post pics if you want to see.. I also used a 32 " ididit, but a 30" would have been better..

Re: aftermarket steering column
ok. I have a filler plate made and will be bolting it in the original location. I have my 3.5 inch drop plate in location under the dash. Was wondering, it seems the best way to put the hole in about the same location as where the stock one was.....any advice?

Re: aftermarket steering column
I used the steel plate that was in the stock rubber cover that the column and shifter rod go through for my filler plate. I'm keeping the stock column and shifter so it worked well for me. I got a new one to cover it.

Here's what I have. I will, on advice, position it where comfortable.

Re: aftermarket steering column
ok, these pictures just show the angle I am going with (for mock up); once I cut the hole in the sheet metal, it should be 6-8 inches down beyond the metal filler....I will post pics of the u-joint side later.
