The Longhorn Option
Not mine but have an appointment to look at it, and maybe it will be.
It has a floating (14 bolt?) one ton rear end from a 91 chevy with something like 13 inch wide tires on the rear plus everything else it mentions in the ad including being an A/C truck. Just curious what you guys think, and if I pick it up, I'd like to find a stock type rear to hang on to just becuase I would like to have the ability to go all stock if I want to. Nobody has ever tried to bag a longhorn right?... http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/2425517794.html |

Re: The Longhorn Option
looks like it's been converted to a dually to me.
It also looks pretty bad ass IMO. Just in case you become one of the longhorn people, it's not an option. The longhorn has it's own model number. If that is as nice as it looks in the thumbnail pics, then it looks like a decent deal to me. If it has a 14 bolt in the back, then you are way ahead of the game. The rears that were in these (most had the eaton/corperate) were not made after 72, and a lot of the brake parts, and rear end parts have been discontinued many many years ago too. |

X2 - looks like a nice truck, wheels don't get much love from me. Longhorns look pretty cool lowered a little bit. Keep us posted.

Re: The Longhorn Option
I'm trying to figure out how to possibly raise it just a little bit, it does look just a touch low but if I can hit a curb head on without scraping then I'm okay with it.
At first I didn't like the rims but the rears are growing on me, he said they are custom and its one rim in the rear with a 13 inch tire. The fronts might take more getting used to, but it gives it sort of a commercial look thats cool when the rest of the truck has been lowered a little. I wish I could figure out a load leveling airbag system.... This guy http://modesto.craigslist.org/cto/2345122278.html is loaded to the gills with little rust if any if anybody is interested too, nice truck I quickly saw in person. And it appears to be stock, nothing it cut or lowered etc. EDIT: Also forgot to mention the bigblock might just be the stock 396 (402), so I'm trying to find threads on how to tell the difference between a 454 and an earlier 396 variant Last edited by flomofo; 06-13-2011 at 11:58 PM. |

Re: The Longhorn Option
It looks lowered already to me. And any lower it would look like a barge on land,IMO. The look is cool and the custom wheels are awesome.

Re: The Longhorn Option
I may be wrong, but it looks like a cab and chassis with a modified bed on it. The space between the front of the bed and wheel tub looks even longer than the longhorn version. I tried blowing the picture up and the factory splice line isnt apparent to me. The baffling part is why would you convert to a dually suspension on all four corners if youre going to use a one piece rim on the rear? Longhorn emblem on the tailgate, rather than on the rear bed sides, throws a flag up as well. Lowering could be by moving the axle to the top of the springs, or spring layers removed, and taking a coil or two out of the front springs. Looks like a nice custom ride though. Just my 2 pennies .....

Re: The Longhorn Option
Nice Longhorn. I have been thinking of putting a 454 with new tranny in my 70 down the road. Good post, it is always good to see more Longhorns.

Re: The Longhorn Option
Here's some pics. Guess why I didn't plop 6 grand for it immediately...Still a really nice truck as far as cab (no rust, good gaps, clean etc), wheels, engine bay etc. but...

Re: The Longhorn Option
Anybody recognize this rear end? And the issue...its two trucks in one probably had the bed and made the frame longer by cutting straight down and only welding scrap plates to the outside of the frame... Outside Inside More of same and other side dont remember... The thing runs good although I didn't ask for a drive. And the Longhorn does have a "396" not a 454. The 70' GMC turned out to be a lot cleaner with faded original paint but really straight panels and gaps. Could maybe get away with a scuff and spray for a driver... http://modesto.craigslist.org/cto/2345122278.html Not even the usual rot under the battery.
