I then dug into the transmission looking for any apparent problems. And removing the GM only parts that would not be reused. More on this later.

More transmission pictures, including the parts that need to be swapped to convert the GM NV4500 ('96 up) to work with the cummins. I will add details about the conversion later.

Then It was time for the 454 to come out. Notice in the first picture the cracked exhaust manifold. Also note the amount of oil around the bellhousing, the rear main leaked bad, strangely when driven, especially at freeway speed it would somewhat seal up. This is the original engine with only 80k miles so that is probably the issue with the seal leak. It was not driven much but towed heavy.
