PRNDL issues

I have questions that some may think are trivial. So I apologize in advance.

The PRNDL in my 69 C20 seems loose, out of adjustment and lacks "indents".

So I need advice from the experts on addressing these issues concerning.

1) Where is the indents, column, tranny?
2) How can I made the shift lever feel less like a wet noodle?

A side note, I think the column has been switched out by a prior owner. How can I identify it, pictures, numbers and/or shape.

Thanks in advance.

Re: PRNDL issues

I believe the detents are in the transmission.

Re: PRNDL issues

As for ID on the column, show us a pic and someone here can give you a good guess.
Last time I had a shifter feel mushy, it was a combination of the threaded pin that holds it at the
column and some loose fasteners on the column, under the hood.

Re: PRNDL issues

Maybe this will help. Here are photos of the PRNDL and Steering Wheel.

Can anyone tell me what this column and PRNDL ID is?

Re: PRNDL issues

looks like its out of our truck vintage with the wrong indiccator on it..try looking at where the linkage meets the column mine was like that I used the plastic cap that comes in the end of an air fitting to shim mine but you can buy a new one for cheap..

have someone move/wiggle the shifter while you look under the hood

X2, That indicator is for I believe a aftermarket tilt column. Get the correct indicator then do the adjustment I tried to explain here.

Correct indicator.

Re: PRNDL issues

looks like a 71/72 column with the older style PRNDL (perndle) and the later pointer.
The detents are in the column. These columns were a crappy design and are known for doing this. Soon the shifter will start to bind, and the lever will get stuck in either the forward, or the pulled back position.
Personally, I would swap it out for a tilt unit. Either truck tilt (if you have the funds) or you can convert a van tilt, which sell for next to nothing.
