I've got the starter blues.help!!

I HAD REPLACED MY STARTER SELONOID 3 WEEKS AGO ON MY 62 WITH A 283 AND IT GAVE UP THE GHOST TODAY SO I HAD THE STARTER TESTED AND INSTALLED A HIGHER GRADE SELONOID AND IT WORKED GREAT ON A BENCH TEST,INSTALLED IT AND NOTHING,RAN A JUMP WIRE FROM THE MAIN BATTERY POST ON THE SELONOID TO THE INNER TERMINAL AND IT TURNED RIGHT OVER,RAN A TEST LIGHT TO THE INNER TERMINAL TURNED THE KEY TO THE START POSITION AND IT WORKED PERFECTLY,PUT THE TESTLIGHT ON THE OUTER TERMINAL AND TURNED THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION AND IT LIT ALSO BUT THE STARTER WILL NOT ENGAGE WITH THE KEY, ON THE SELONOID I HAVE 2 WIRES GOING TO THE OUTER TERMINAL AND 1 WIRE TO THE INSIDE ON THE SELONOID IS THAT CORRECT? NOW TO THROW A COUPLE OF MONKEYS INTO THAT MESS AT THE SAME TIME I REMOUNTED MY COIL ON THE FIREWALL ALONG WITH THE WHITE RESISTOR AND I DON'T THINK I GOT MY WIRES TURNED AROUND BUT AFTER TODAY YOU NEVER KNOW.I HAVE ONE WIRE FROM MY SELONOID HARNESS (GREEN)THAT I HAVE ON ONE SIDE OF THE RESISTOR ALONG WITH ONE WIRE (BROWN)FROM THE FIREWALL ON THE SAME END,ON THE OTHER END I HAVE 1 WIRE GOING TO THE COIL AND OF COURSE 1 WIRE GOING FROM THE OTHER END OF THE COIL TO THE POINTS. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT!
THANKS,KENT.

thanks again!

could it just be a badly corroded positive battery cable?

Pull off the signal wire and use a test light on it to see if it lights up when key is turned. I've seen plenty of starters test good on bench but under load on vechle not work at all. The st6arter drive could be bad just no the soilned

well thanks jon, that was the problem.when the starter would work in the truck when you jumped the terminals you would think that the cables would carry suffient amps when you turn the key and run the power through the entire system but that was where it failed. my ground bolt into the water pump was rusted and this truck had 6 gauge cables on it not 4 gauge so like you said jon maybe they were factory cables but i replaced both the positive and negative cables and it worked.

thanks guys for all of your input and help.
