Water pump rebuild

Where do you get a water pump rebuilt. I want the same pump back so
I can stay origonal. Or where can you find parts to rebuild your own...I
have a press for the project.

Re: Water pump rebuild

I didn't know people still rebuilt them! It's been 20 years since the last one I rebuilt, but I got the parts from napa. Couldn't tell you if they still carry them. Good luck!

Long Island Corvette Supply sells a few kits. Check section 21 in their catalog.

Re: Water pump rebuild

Easy to do if you have a shop press. (or know someone that has one)

Instructions can easily be found on the net. I did one a few years ago for my 66 Impala and had no troubles.

Re: Water pump rebuild

I had one done at a CarQuest store. It was for a '60 Cadillac. They couldn't find one, so they had my original rebuilt. I think it was like $50 or something and took about a week. Probably CarQuest or NAPA can get it done for you.

Re: Water pump rebuild

From personal experience....I bought a rebuild that leaked when I fired it up. The cover bolts on the backside weren't tightened properly. I swore off rebuilds, after that.

Now, with the economy as it is...rebuilds don't look too bad. Just tighten all the bolts, first.....before installation.

Re: Water pump rebuild

Well thanks folks for all the reponse. I found a kit on Ebay and am waiting
for it to arrive. The 7/16 bolts on the rear plate should be about 15 to 20
inch pounds and will use blue sealant and hope for the best...Will post a
thread as to the results..James

You will need the gasket for the back, fiting the cover without it & just using sealant lets it sit to close to the impeller and it rubs on the inside....happened to me anyway.

Re: Water pump rebuild

Thanks for the tip, the gasket comes in the kit. So which end comes apart
first? Do you use a standard puller for the fan hub? I couldn't find a lot of
info on the net for this job. I have never done one before. Guess I should
document the position of the hub and impeller on the shaft to get them pressed back on in the same position. LOL

Re: Water pump rebuild

I know there is nothing out there for the DIY WP rebuild, I gave up on the idea I was already rebuilding my trans & my carb, so I was happy to just check it for wear and it seemed fine, then striped the old paint off it, installed new gasket & a repaint....kinda hoping it's a case of "if it aint broke"
We'll see when it gets reinstalled.
Good luck with yours mate.
