Temperature sender

Hello,

So I just finished breaking in a new motor. And the heads are from a 84 van and my truck is a 79. The temp sender hole is bigger. So we got the BWD WT359. And I think it is not accurate. I think its reading higher then it is. Is this the right sender? The one from my old motor was a 3/8 inch sender, the new one is the 1/2". If this is the right one, then I guess I'll just keep that in mind and live with it.

Thanks!

update:
I am not 100% sure that is the right sender I got. I will look tomorrow when I get back to the shop.

Re: Temperature sender

I had the same problem after my engine swap. The new engine had the larger hole, so I went with a sender from a 70s truck. It indicated very high, and scared the youknowwhat out of me during break-in. I used an adapter to put the old sender in, and it read normal. Get a new replacement sender that is like the old one (or re-use the old one) and you should be fine.

Re: Temperature sender

Use the sender that is correct to your truck with a 1/2 to 3/8 bushing.

Re: Temperature sender

I had a similar situation with my '73 truck when I put 305HO heads from an '80s Monte SS onto my stock 307 engine. The Monte SS heads had a 3/8 thread and my truck had something larger. I spent a half hour looking through a Napa Echlin catalog until I found a temperature sender with the correct 3/8 thread size and an ohm range that matched the stock sender. FYI, your stock sender is a Napa Echlin TS6640 and has an ohm range of 138 - 156 @ 220°. My truck uses a different sender otherwise I'd dig up the P/N of the sender I used.

Hope this helps,
Ed

Re: Temperature sender

Here's a link to the NAPA Echlin website

Click on the 'catalog' link at the top and select the electrical components PDF. The temperature senders are toward the back of the catalog. Easiest to use the table of contents.

Try calling Napa and telling them what you're looking for.
