No. You can run disc brakes with and without hydrovac boosters.

Re: do you have to have a booster for front discs

Now that you mention it, does anyone have a hydro boost setup? I'm talking about one that feeds off the PS pump. Theres one in my 01 silverado and its nice because its compact and doesnt take up mush space. That would be a neat intall in your truck if you are concerned about space and could make it work.

Re: do you have to have a booster for front discs

Seems I saw a post on one of the forums about using a van-type of hydroboost. Late model, I'm assuming.

Re: do you have to have a booster for front discs

poweer brakes was optional all years and models of trucks. Soem years of burbs had it standard, but the trucks didn't. You could get cars well into the 80's and probably 90's with manual disk brakes.

Unless its a 71 or 72 C20 or C30, right? Pretty sure those were standard power.

i don't have my books in front of me, but I'm 99% positive that power brakes were optional on all of the pickups well into the late 80's

Re: do you have to have a booster for front discs

seen a few... I almost bought a 74 short fleet with a 250/th350. The trans was the only option on it. Manual steering and brakes.
Also knew a guy with a long/fleet... 82 or so if memory serves... had a six cylinder/4 speed, and not much else, again, maunal steering and brakes.

Re: do you have to have a booster for front discs

This thread makes me think of how many times I have almost had to pull off the road and puke because of how close I came to hitting someone while trying to stop my truck with 4 corner drum brakes.

Re: do you have to have a booster for front discs

Drum brakes definetely need a booster if you want to stop anytime soon pulling a trailer. If they are in perfect working condition they will do for daily driving once you get use to them, but it does take a while since all of the newer vehicles stop so quick and easy.

When we start working on my '67 this year a booster will be one of the first things we do.

Re: do you have to have a booster for front discs

<--- manual 4 wheel drums... with the exception of brake fade (only when pushing it too hard) I have NEVER had a problem with mine.
The ONLY reason I am swapping to disks is due to the cost and lack of avalibility of the parts for my drums.
