1968 Malibu "Grandma"

I've never posted a build thread, but I just bought a new project. An old acquaintance is going through the big D and didn't have any room for his family's car. His grandmother bought it in 1969 at a local dealership that is still in existence. About ten years ago, a friend of mine did some rust repair at front and rear glass sections, and the PO had cut out some rust in the rear quarters.

The 307/Powerglide combo still runs. I changed plugs on it, changed oil and filter and drove it home. My friend that did the metal work 10 years ago replaced the lower quarter panel metal. I have begun putting the bumpers and trim all back on. I pulled the rear seat this weekend and cleaned it. Next up will be getting the front seat recovered to match the original upholstery and adding a wood Grant wheel.

The plan is to get all mechanicals up to par: install HEI, new sway arm links, cut the coils to lower 2", and get A/C functional. For wheels I plan on buying 17X8 Wheel Vintiques steelies and running some COPO style poverty caps I just won on eBay for $19.99.

Main Goal: 2012 Power Tour with wife and twin girls

Re: 1968 Malibu "Grandma"

Thanks! Got the front split bench to the upholstery shop today. Soon as I get it back I hope to have the car lowered in front and the brakes working better. It will be getting driven daily then.

Dog dish caps! Always a good call. Going to go with a bigger wider rear wheel?

Re: 1968 Malibu "Grandma"

Well, I really wanted to do 17X8s all way around, but just couldn't swing it monetarily. So I bought two 15x8 Wheel Vintiques 62 series, and I plan to hit the wrecking yards and try to scrounge up two factory 15X7s for the front. Plan on running 255/60R15 on the rear, and a 235 something on front. Maybe I can run up on some cheap 17s before 2012 Power Tour, but I will be more than happy with poverty caps.

Re: 1968 Malibu "Grandma"

Not much to update. I got new seat covers from OPD and they and the seats are at my upholsterer. I have two 15X8 Wheel Vintiques to paint this weekend, and will hopefully reinstall the freshly cleaned seatbelts. Here is a pic of the only visible progress from this past weekend:

Re: 1968 Malibu "Grandma"

Slow progress. The seats are at the upholstery shop. I am hoping that this weekend I can squirt some color on the two wheels I have, and maybe do a little front end tweekery.

Progress!

Even took it for a spin afterward. Next up, get all the lights working, inside and out.

Re: 1968 Malibu "Grandma"

Got all my lights working today and replaced the brake light switch. The old external alternator setup isn't charging, so I got a CS-130 pigtail at Oreilly's and will convert to a high amp alternator tomorrow. Also plan on installing the front seat belts, straightening the steering wheel and rewiring the horn. I put the headlight bezels back on, and found that the grille extensions don't line up with the grille at all. That has me wondering.
