Can somone explain the differences in coil spring rear axles for 67-72 C10s. When did they have 5 lug vs 6lug? Are they wider in 71/72? Are all the 5 lug bolt patterns the same? 5 on 5?

While I don't know the widths, the rear did get 3/4 inch wider in 1970. In 71, they went to 5 lug, and retained the extra width. All 5 lug trucks were 5 on 5.

Not all 70's have the longer axles. If in doubt measure. The shorter rear ends are 55 1/4" between backing plates. The 71-72 style are 56 3/4" between the backing plates.

K so this may be stupid but, if they are only 3/4" longer, would it not be possible to put a newer style rear axle on the 69 p/u adn just get rims with a different offset to compensate????

Possible or just a stupid idea???

Since the axle is the inner race for your wheel bearing there may be a problem of the axles where they ride on the rollers in the bearing. You would want to check out dimentionally where everything lines up. I believe that it will not work but I have never tried it.

I think he ment the whole rear end assembly.
If I am right, then yes you can and with no problems as long as you remember it when buying wide rims/rubber.

Yes I did mean the whole rear end assembly. To me that would sem like the easiest way to convert the rear to 5 lug, correct me if I am wrong.
