chevy stepside tailgate question

I have a heavily modified 54 chevy pickup that has no tailgate. the opening on mine measures 50 inches wide by 20.5 inches tall. can someone who owns a 54-87 chevy stepside take a measurement and tell me them.

thanks,

Austin

Re: chevy stepside tailgate question

Austin, I have a new one at home. I got it and a new front panal for a step side before I knew enough to think about the diff in step side and fleet side width...
If you don't get an answer by tonight I'll measure it up for you.

Re: chevy stepside tailgate question

54chevytruck, I think that the 1954 tailgate is around 50 1/2 inches. If it is a factory bed the tailgate fits back in the bed. The bed has a step in it. I think it is a 1/2 inch in and about 2 inches from the back edge. The edges on the 54 gate are both the same (front and back). On a 53 and older gates the outside edge is wider than the inside edge that way the bed is sealed off. The bed has not step in it.

54chevytruck, here is a picture of a custom bed I built, same as a factory bed just has a raised bed floor. Does yours have the step for the tailgate.

I built my own tailgate using 1 1/2 pipe and 1 1/2"x 1/4" steel picked from Lowes
